Publisher's Summary

In Wishful Drinking, Carrie Fisher tells the true and intoxicating story of her life with inimitable wit. Born to celebrity parents, she was picked to play a princess in a little movie called Star Wars when only 19 years old. "But it isn't all sweetness and light sabers."

Alas, aside from a demanding career and her role as a single mother (not to mention the hyperspace hairdo), Carrie also spends her free time battling addiction, weathering the wild ride of manic depression and lounging around various mental institutions. It's an incredible tale - from having Elizabeth Taylor as a stepmother, to marrying (and divorcing) Paul Simon, from having the father of her daughter leave her for a man, to ultimately waking up one morning and finding a friend dead beside her in bed.

    "Falls Short"

I have always loved Carrie Fisher's sense of humor and I still do. But this book sounds more like a letter to someone who doesn't know her history, who has the same mental problems, and she is trying to say, "See what I have been through and am still laughing. You can do it too." She does say that this is basically the monolog she recites and she wrote it down so not to forget it. Unfortunately, her reading of it falls short.

The audio books I get tend to be either 1) scifi or 2) things for my husband and me to listen to on long road trips--humor or history

    "Laughter through the tears"

Loved listening to this as an audiobook performed by Fisher herself. I laughed a lot, but behind many of the laughs were tears. Tears that she had to experience life through the prism of mental illness and addiction. Tears that she was brave enough to share her journey with the world through her books. Tears that this amazing person has passed away, there will never be another Carrie Fisher. Goodbye, sweet princess!

"Life is tragic and as funny as hell."

I've loved all of Carrie Fisher's work. This is laugh-out loud funny especially because she is reading it. Her version of her mother's (Debbie Reynolds) voice is worth the price of the book. But most of all, what I've taken from all of Fisher's writing is that you need to see the humor in pain and tragedy in order to get through it. Her life is testament to this--and there's not an ounce of self-pity.

    "Trying to be funny?"

I so struggled to get to the end of this book. Not wishing to speak ill of the dead but Carrie Fisher tells her life story as a string of comedy moments among the rich and famous. When in fact her struggles with alcohol and drug addictions and being bi-polar make for tragic listening!

"Wit galore, but ever so short"

Having listened to a lot of interviews with Carrie, I might have been expecting a bit too much from this collection of anecdotes. She makes for a fantastic narrator, but the book lacks substance, only touching on such topics like her relationship with Paul Simon or influence of places she lived in.

    "Rollercoaster!!"

I'm so glad that I chose this Autobiography of the late Carrie Fisher.
A life cut short, however, Carrie Fisher narrates her autobiography with wit and even manages to make her rollercoaster life story so engaging from the first sentence. I laughed so much; even she laughs as she reads. I highly recommend you buy this audiobook, and tell your friends to do the same. Moving, funny, very frank, and extremely revealing.
I've listened to this three times already. Superb!!

    "Amazing - funny, but true!"

This book was fantastic! Carrie's approach to life is this: "If my life wasn't funny it would just be true, and that is unacceptable."

This is touched on within every paragraph within the book - extremely funny; the way that she approaches these subjects about her life is to be admired.

I would 100% recommend to someone who wants an interesting book, filled with humour.
