Amazing

This is exactly the sort of book about rock history that you’d want to read. It unearths the best, most memorable stories, and follows the entire narrative with passion but without pageantry, self-aggrandizing and unnecessary narcissism and social opinions (see: Peter Doggett), or histrionics. He tells of the social milieu surrounding the history of rock without any sort of agenda except to tell the story in a straightforward way- so refreshing.

Narrator is great too.

Rock as culture

First off, let me say that I think David Colacci is easily the best narrator that I have heard. He imparts a warmth and, where appropriate, sense of humor that I find unmatched. I am a rock & roll fan - much more so from 1964 on - so this book was delight to me. The cultural significance of (some) music can be seen in Ward’s writing. And the vignettes of groups like the Beatles are entertaining and belong in this book that narrates the early days of rock & roll. I realize that this book may be too detailed for some people, but for readers like me, this book suggests songs and artists to listen to. And it offers a way to perceive them in a demythologized manner.
I am champing at the bit to move on to Volume 2.

the best music to date

diversity of music and huge transition in the early 60's..the Motown scene and British music invasion save the huge success of the Beach Boys.

Inspiring!

I learned so much and have been really inspired by this book! I'll have to read it more than once to retain even half of the information. I have discovered (and rediscovered) so many artists without whom I don't know how I was living.

No need for music in the text--just hop over to Spotify and play the song yourself.

Great Book, Highly Recommended

Found this book to be very informative, Well written and narrated. Would have liked more on the technology that helped make Rock and Roll possible i.e. Recording techniques, evolution of drums and guitars.

Better than several college texts on the topic

This book does an excellent job at navigating the odd twists and turns that happened in American music leading to the birth of rock and roll. I'm anxiously awaiting the next volume!
