Publisher's Summary

A journey behind the mask and into the mind of Gotham City's Caped Crusader, timed for the summer 2012 release of The Dark Knight Rises.

Batman is one of the most compelling and enduring characters to come from the Golden Age of Comics, and interest in his story has only increased through countless incarnations since his first appearance in Detective Comics #27 in 1939. Why does this superhero without superpowers fascinate us? What does that fascination say about us? Batman and Psychology explores these and other intriguing questions about the masked vigilante, including: Does Batman have PTSD? Why does he fight crime? Why as a vigilante? Why the mask, the bat, and the underage partner? Why are his most intimate relationships with bad girls he ought to lock up? And why won't he kill that homicidal, green-haired clown? This book:

  • Gives you fresh insights into the complex inner world of Batman and Bruce Wayne, and the life and characters of Gotham City
  • Explains psychological theory and concepts through the lens of one of the worlds most popular comic book characters
  • Is written by a psychology professor and Superherologist (scholar of superheroes)

    "Basic psychology meets Batman"

This book brought me back to my college years. Refreshed my memory and helped me apply it to one of my favorite superheros. I highly recommend this book to any huge Batman fan.

"Great primer on both Batman & Psychology"

As a longtime Batman fan, with a degree in psychology, who teaches, among other subjects, consumer behaviour and organizational behaviour, I found this book highly entertaining. It very creatively melds a detailed exploration of the multiple versions of the origin stories of Batman, his foes and his allies, with a solid and wide-ranging tour of a variety of psychological theories and practices.

    "Interesting!"
What made the experience of listening to Batman and Psychology the most enjoyable?

Pretty much everything. Really liked this book.

Who was your favorite character and why?

My favourite character..? In the Batman universe..? Oh, don't get me started. Not only is Batman himself awesome, but the series totally has the best rogues gallery.

Which scene did you most enjoy?

As this is a non-fiction book, I can't point at a particular scene, but I can say that I enjoyed the way the book was put together. Superherologist Travis Langley takes a closer look at many of the characters, discussing them in the light of psychology - at some stage even discussing the fans in that same light.

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

I guess that'd be a documentary, and I'd just steal "A Dark and Stormy Knight" from the book. Very catchy.

"A factual look at fictional folk"

Not only informative about the inner workings of character's minds, but a great starter course for psychology on general. It treats every subject totally seriously, no matter how ridiculous it is (with healthy doses of dry wit here and there), leading to a comprehensive examination of a wide array of topics, including comic book history.

Almost no stone is left unturned: the effect of losing a parent, what drives bat-foes to murder, how effective are Batman's crime fighting methods, does wearing a costume change your mentality and personality. From fear to love to nature to nurture, everything you've always wondered and things you may have never questioned.

    "Very interesting."

This was great. A different experience it may be, but this is hugely interesting. I'm a CBT therapist so hearing some of the principles and techniques examined in relation to Batman was actually a thrill. Great stuff.

    "Great book! Amazing concept"

I didn't really know what I was expecting with this book, but what I found was an amazing insight into the basic principles of phycology, using Batman source material as the reference points and case studies. This is for anyone who is interested in batman comic book back stories and an in-depth look into his life and his villains and the way they are.

"A great study of the worlds greatest detective"

I studied psychology at university many years ago so enjoyed revisiting the subject in an area of popular culture that I adore - comic books. Batman is a great subject of study, not only due to the complexities of his character but because of his fantastic 'rogues gallery'. If you enjoy delving into the world of Batman I thoroughly recommend this book. It is also wonderfully narrated!

    "Fascinating if not for audio"

The primary issue with these books is that they don't really make great audio books. While interesting, and worth the read, this is a textbook with a clever theme. Listing to someone read a list of two pages of phobias is, frankly, not good. Almost certainly better as a reference book (ebook or paper) than an audiobook.

Obviously the "story" sucks, but it's an interesting thing to read anyway.
