Editorial reviews

Japanese animation, or anime, has grown in cultural significance, becoming increasingly popular all over the world. Anime is now shorthand for a certain aesthetic, such as over-exaggerated features (an American influence) and limited motion (initially a budgetary concern). iMinds presents the history and breadth of anime, from the cutesy to the violent, from children's cartoons to the pornographic, and shows its evolution into a beloved global product. Luca James Lee brings a slight sense of whimsy to his performance, making Anime not just an informative summary of the art form, but a fun one, as well.

Publisher's summary

Learn about Anime with iMinds insightful audio knowledge series. Super robots to schoolgirls, Astroboy cute to violent realism, Pokemon to pornography. All of these different images, stories and types of entertainment, in cartoon form, can be called Anime.

The term Anime covers an enormous range of animation. A specific definition of Anime is difficult as the style is vast, steeped in history and ever evolving. Most often it characterizes all animation of Japanese origin - or of the Japanese style. Anime has a long and varied production history in Japan, but principally entered the Western conscience in the 1980's. Since then it has grown in popularity and international significance. Today it is a major and influential art form, even called a cultural paradigm, produced and consumed the world over.

Interestingly in Japan Anime is a generic term to reference all animation styles and production from around the globe. It is only when the term is used in English that it is specific to Japanese animation, and in turn conjures up a very distinct look and style.

The Arts - A HowlStrom Review by Kiba Snowpaw

Introduction:
From the frozen tundras of HowlStrom, where the tales of old are whispered by the icy winds, I, Kiba Snowpaw, the alpha Ice Wolf, embark on a journey into the vibrant world of anime. As the ancient glaciers of my homeland preserve the legends of our ancestors, I find myself drawn to the colorful tales of distant lands. Today, I share my reflections on "Anime: The Arts," a brief yet insightful exploration into the realm of anime.

Hook and Thesis:
Anime, a term that evokes a myriad of images, from colossal robots to delicate schoolgirls, from heartwarming tales to intense action sequences. But what truly defines anime? "Anime: The Arts" seeks to unravel the enigma behind this global phenomenon, offering listeners a glimpse into its rich history and ever-evolving nature.

Basic Plot Summary:
"Anime: The Arts" delves into the vast world of anime, tracing its roots in Japan and its meteoric rise to international acclaim. The audiobook sheds light on the diverse range of animation styles that fall under the umbrella of anime, emphasizing its significance as a major art form and cultural paradigm. Interestingly, while the term "anime" is synonymous with Japanese animation in the West, in Japan, it encompasses all animation styles globally.

Analysis/Evaluation:
iMinds presents a concise yet comprehensive overview of anime, capturing its essence in a mere seven minutes. The audiobook successfully navigates the complexities of anime, highlighting its multifaceted nature and its profound impact on global pop culture.

Characters:
While the audiobook doesn't delve deep into specific characters from anime series, it paints a broad picture of the types of characters one might encounter, from the iconic Astroboy to the myriad of monster girls and schoolgirls that populate the anime universe.

Structure:
The structure of "Anime: The Arts" is akin to a brisk journey, taking listeners from the origins of anime to its current global status. Its concise format ensures that listeners remain engaged throughout, making it an ideal introduction to the world of anime.

Impact:
For a wolf like me, hailing from the icy realms of HowlStrom, the audiobook serves as a bridge to a world teeming with color, emotion, and boundless imagination. It underscores the universality of storytelling, reminding us that tales of valor, love, and adventure are cherished across all cultures and realms.

Praise and Critique:
The audiobook's strength lies in its ability to condense a vast topic into a digestible format. However, some might argue that its brevity is also its weakness, as it merely scratches the surface of the intricate world of anime.

Evaluation:
"Anime: The Arts" stands as a testament to the enduring allure of anime. While it offers just a glimpse into this vast universe, it piques curiosity, encouraging listeners to delve deeper and explore the myriad tales that anime has to offer.

Comparison:
Much like the legends of HowlStrom, where heroes brave fierce blizzards and confront ancient evils, anime offers tales of courage, love, and transformation. Both are testaments to the power of storytelling, transcending boundaries and resonating with souls across realms.

Conclusion:
As the eternal winter of HowlStrom envelopes my homeland, tales from distant lands, like "Anime: The Arts," offer warmth and inspiration. It serves as a beacon, guiding those unfamiliar with anime into its vibrant world. With anticipation in my heart, I look forward to exploring more tales from the realm of anime, letting their magic and wonder transport me to far-off lands.

May the frosty embrace of HowlStrom guide your adventures, and may tales from distant shores kindle the fires of your spirit, even in the heart of winter.

Simple

This is, in essence, a very basic presentation on what Anime is. It sort of reminded me of a presentation I'd eitger once heard, or had read in the past.

It's good but the book is too short.

The book has some good information on the anime/manga industry but it is too short a read.

Informational blurb

Wouldn't call this a story so much as a info blurb or the summary flap on a hardcover copy of "History of Anime" still just enough to be of interest
