Publisher's summary

An ancient, alien technology that will change what it means to be human, a conspiracy begun before the first pyramid was built, and a world threatened by an unimaginable horror.

Deep in the Indian Ocean, Dr. Selene Khan enters an underwater dome thousands of years old, one that is fully operational. She barely escapes to the surface, only to discover that her research vessel has vanished. Can she make it to shore 100 miles away?

On the other side of the world, Agent Jack Elliot uncovers an impossible 900 grams of antimatter. The trail leads him to Egypt, betrayal, and a sinister brainwashing facility. There, in a desperate move, he rescues Dr. Selene Khan, fleeing with her into the desert.

Together, Selene and Jack race to unravel a global conspiracy and learn the truth about an ancient, alien artifact and how civilization really began. Two people must summon the courage and extraordinary ability to stop the world's oldest plan from plunging humanity onto a twisted, evolutionary path.

Artifact is a lightning-paced adventure, utterly unpredictable right up to its stunning conclusion.

Nice book.

Not sure yet about this book. I think it needs more books , all in all not to bad.

Probably best for YAs

Story starts off well, quick paced and introducing potentially interesting puzzles but it soon devolved into a too-long exposition of pseudo-science and pseudo-philosophy that strains this reader's ability to suspend disbelief. The end is far too long and leaves much unanswered.

Cover not what it seems

OK the cover looks like a crashed space ship, this book has nothing to do with space ships per sec. I almost stopped listening to the book because it jumped around a bit and I was loosing my place in the story. It took about 6 chapters for me to get into it, at that is to long in my world

All that said it was an interesting story but the pace was slow, JMHO. I am not a big fan of Logan White and this is the first time I have heard of him. Maybe he will grow on me.
I never did get a feeling of attachment with any of the charterers I could less if they survived or not. I think for that reason if there is a follow up book I will avoid it.

I thin Vaugh has written better books this was not my fav.

Ending seems rushed

Interesting story line The beginning spends a lot of time giving detailed back stories. The end of the book fells rushed, almost like it was beginning brought to end because of time, length? overall I enjoyed it!

Good if it were intended for a YA audience.

While there was some interesting tech and an interesting plot. The story needed more development. IMHO this had a chance to be an epic sci-fi thriller. While still an interesting listen it tetters on the edge of recommendabilty if that is even a word.
Luke Daniels saved the story with another great performance.

I liked it. It was not at all what I expected.

The funny part about this book selection was I did not read anything about it. I picked it totally based on the fact it was was science fiction, and the title. With that being said I was not disappointed at all!

narrator's poor choices

How did the narrator detract from the book?

The narrator made really poor choices of character voices, most notably the big military man, the research ship captain, the military general and the lead character. The first three were stereotypical "big military man", "ship captain", and "military general" gruff voices that were overwrought and uninspired--you can hear these exact same voices in any Saturday morning cartoon. Very distracting! NOBODY talks like THAT!
The lead character's "female" voice was an odd and confusing choice. It sounded like a depressed "Marvin the Android" deep-voiced male transvestite.
I really had trouble concentrating on the story, at times, and had to rewind several times while I forced myself to put aside my frustrated eye-rolling and mimicry of these voices!

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

yes

The awful voice of Selene

Luke Daniels is good , but not for this read . Something is missing/wrong . It could have been a great listen , but needed more editing
