Arthritis is the most common cause of disability in the world - greater than both back pain and heart disease. One example, rheumatoid arthritis (RA), is the most common autoimmune disease, affecting 1% of the US population, and almost 68 million people worldwide. Conventional medicine tends to treat arthritis with strong, gut-damaging, immune-suppressing pain medications, temporarily relieving the symptoms of the disease without addressing its root causes.

Story
Arthritis reversal is more about human potential. On doing research for this audiobook I studied several body-building groups. I found one in Japan where the minimum age is 75 years. That's right; you have to be 75 years old to join. A lot of people think that as we age we're supposed to break down, and that's not true. If you don't drive a car, the car is going to last a long time; but if you don't drive a body, it's going to break down early. With human beings, the more we use our body, the longer it works.

Story
We are currently witnessing a paradigm shift in the understanding of autoimmune disease. The latest scientific research reveals that an individual’s microbiome can have a profound impact on inflammation throughout the body. In those with psoriasis or autoimmune arthritis, there is often a lack of beneficial bacteria that normally calm the immune system - known as “keystone” species. Without these species, harmful bacteria can flourish, the gut barrier becomes damaged, and the immune system runs wild.

At last, something helpful
Any additional comments?
Very relieved to finally find something that really helped with my arthritis, of which i have had for over ten years. As other people have said, this is not a complete cure (as that does not exist), but i can say i am a LOT LOT better than i have been and in some areas the pain and stiffness is now completely gone

Absolutely fantastic book and so well read!
The book was incredibly informative and I really did learn a lot, but just the way everything was read really made it all clear to me! The amount of enlightening content through the entire piece is incredible - I learnt a lot more than I expected to. But despite the incredibly informative nature of the book, it was also highly enjoyable - as somebody with a curious interest in medical conditions, the book was very fascinating to me!
I've never heard anything from Annette Martin before, but I'm sure I will in the future because of this.

Not a complete cure but definitely a lot better
As my title says, it is not a complete cute for arthritis as that is practically impossible but it did definitely reduce my symptoms by quite a lot, giving me more mobility in life and less pain. Good narration, easy to follow and to understand.

It gets better
Would you listen to Arthritis: Escape the Pain again? Why?
Yes I would. There is a lot to learn from. Even though I took notes while reading, I would like to listen to the book again to better understand some of the tips described. Like the author said, everyone needs to identify his or her own body and its unique triggers before examining which tips yield the best results for him. There’s enough to go around for everyone of all ages looking for some relief from the pains of arthritis.
What did you learn from Arthritis: Escape the Pain that you would use in your daily life?
Dealing with a family member with arthritis gave me a direct view into the life of sufferers from the disease. Helping them do things when they have flare ups is very important and managing the pain is a daily struggle. The book stresses the most important thing by saying that natural treatments may not have immediate effects and these may also differ from person to person.
In my own case, my aunt wasn’t the type that wanted to exercise so walking for about 20 minutes helped. Also after keeping a diary for about two months, we could identify that she always got her worst flare ups when the weather was cold. Keeping warm was easy in the summer, during the winter, what helped the most was getting good sleep. By switching her mattress from hard foam to memory foam with goose down pillows, her quality of sleep improved. Better sleep meant better rest for her joint and therefore less pain.
You see, sometimes all it just takes is forming good habits that helps you take better care of your body and that’s what the book is all about. A practical guide to managing and reducing the effects of arthritis from someone who successfully achieved good results from forming good habits.
The emotional and logistics support which the book talked about are also very important. By replacing a bath tub with a walk-in shower, we reduced the risk of falling in the bathroom. Swapping out tiles for a wool shaggy rug also made sure the floors were warmer and softer to touch, less jarring when she walked equals less pain. People living with OA also need us to be rays of sunshine in their lives.
The importance of eating healthy cannot be overstated. Omega-3 and magnesium supplements are also important because of their natural anti-inflammatory properties. Combined with vegetables such as broccoli, bok choy, cauliflower and cabbage, the body immune system is stronger and better equipped to deal with flare ups and maintain a better state of wellbeing.
The book also recommends maintaining a balance between resting too much and exercising too much. I think in this case, finding activities that ensure mobility without undue aggravation is important. In my aunt’s case, it was helping the kids get ready for school in the morning. About an hour of making lunch boxes, going over assignments and dressing them up for school helped her stay loose without over-exerting her joints.
In conclusion, the book stresses the importance of following the doctor’s advice religiously, taking care of what one eats, knowing and respecting one’s body and also keeping a positive disposition as a natural way of managing arthritis. Practical advice from someone who knows exactly what they’re talking about
Any additional comments?
The book has made more informed about helping arthritis sufferers and being a better provider of emotional support. I think most arthritis sufferers need us to be more empathetic of their plight but more importantly be able to practically assist them to live better lives. Not just by taking them for doctors’ appointments but being a supportive part of their lives.
Some people need a walking or exercise partner more than they need a shoulder to cry on. The book has made me better understand arthritis and how to manage it if I ever find myself suffering in the future or have a loved one suffering from it.

Wow, what a difference!
Would you listen to Arthritis: Escape the Pain again? Why?
I have no doubt that I will be retuning to this book again and again. The methods in it have helped me control my RA pain without the use of pharmaceuticals. I'm astounded by the results.
What did you learn from Arthritis: Escape the Pain that you would use in your daily life?
I found nearly every part of this book helpful. I live with rheumatoid arthritis and since entering my mid thirties, things have really progressed. My daily pain levels are tough to cope with and my flare ups are more frequent. I've been reluctant to take heavy medication and am happy to say that this book taught me how I can live mostly medication free by simply altering my diet and adding in a few vitamins. Once I found out which foods were causing my inflammation and eliminated them from my diet, my whole life changed. My daily pain has dramatically decreased and I haven't had a flare up yet! I also learned a lot about the "rest/exercise" balance which I found particularly helpful.
Any additional comments?
This book covers all types of arthritis and inflammatory conditions. I think that anyone suffering from chronic pain would benefit from implementing a few of Sarah Woodside's techniques into their lives. This book doesn't dictate what you can and can't eat like a lot of other pain relief plan diets - it shows you how to find out what foods are effecting YOU badly so that you can make informed choices for yourself. Really great book. Very very helpful!

Simple and easy to follow
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Yes, anyone who suffers or knows someone who suffers from rheumatoid or osteo arthritis would greatly benefit. After hearing in a very simplified manner that was easy to understand that working with my doctor, learning care plans and natural treatments, learning triggers, changing my diet, exercising and learning all the ways on how to maintain a positive mental attitude can help change my life by accepting and living life in the present. This information will help me lead a better life and gives me hope for my future. I would think it will help others have hope.
Which character – as performed by Annette Martin – was your favorite?
She spoke from the first person, so I would think that Annette Martin was portraying Sarah Woodside author of the audio book.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yes, I really related to the narrator as she described her personal experience that led to her rheumatoid arthritis, and the pain she was in with this debilitating condition (I have osteo arthritis). The frustration of dealing with medical professionals for a proper diagnosis while in excruciating pain for years until she was finally diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis. I felt hopeful when she described what she did to regain her health and life.
Any additional comments?
The many aspects covered by this book to help escape arthritic pain for rheumatoid and osteo arthritis was very easy to follow and understand. It was very well researched. She gives the facts about arthritis. It contains methods and tips for positive life changes improving quality of life.

great audiobook, but narrator is too fast
Any additional comments?
Arthritis affects many people, but how does one cope and even escape the pain? With over 200 types of arthritis, is there any end-all solutions to the problem? Probably not. In this book, Woodside states such, but takes all aspects of arthritis and gives simple tips for getting control of one’s arthritis. Suffering from arthritis pain since she was 18 years old, she was tired a lot, was frequently in pain, and her mobility was always in flux. Through perseverance and a lot of research and trial an error, she found her way to being pain-free. Now, she’s sharing it with others. Through her relatively quick-listen audiobook, she shares suggestions such as keeping a diary of food, weather, and drink habits to figure out one’s triggers, effect of Nightshade on one’s pain, exercises for people with arthritis, ways to prevent attacks, and how to reduce inflammation. These tips may seem simple, but when put together, her personal experience and studies she mentions in the book show that they can make a difference.
Woodside’s are simple, but effective tips that most people would probably never think of when dealing with arthritis. Although it would be nice to have a source bibliography for further information, she uses different studies to support her theories that are well-known, but may not be common knowledge for some listeners. I have a family member who suffers from arthritis in her shoulders and, although she hasn’t tried some of the author’s other tips I shared with her yet, she has tried a few of the exercise ideas (such as yoga, Tai Chi, aquatics) and has found them to be helpful with pain. Narrator, Annette Martin, is an animated narrator who brings to life the author’s book, but she talks really fast for the average note-taker. For this reason, some may need to slow down the speed of the narration or pause in places in order to absorb all the information they learn from the author. Overall, people who are suffering from arthritis will greatly benefit from listening to this audiobook.
