This book tells about the life of the father of the Confederate Major General Stuart, who served one term in the United States House of Representatives and multiple terms in the Virginia House of Delegates and Senate along with long tenures as Commonwealth Attorney for multiple counties in Southwest Virginia. Married to Elizabeth Letcher Pannill Stuart, the couple raised over ten children at their home, Laurel Hill, in Patrick County, Virginia, just across the state line from Mount Airy, North Carolina.
