Publisher's Summary

About Modern Standard Arabic:

  • Modern Standard Arabic (MSA), also known as Standard Arabic or Literary Arabic, is the variety of Arabic used in writing and in formal speech.
  • MSA is spoken by an estimated 300 million people worldwide.
  • It is one of the six official languages of the United Nations.
  • Modern Standard Arabic is the official language of all Arab countries and is the only form of Arabic taught in schools at all levels. Because of this, MSA is the lingua franca of all educated Arabic speakers, regardless of nationality or spoken native dialect.

Can learning another language be as easy as learning your own? Yes, with Pimsleur® it's that easy. Learn on your own time, at your own pace, and wherever you choose. Modern Standard Arabic Level 2 includes 16 hours of spoken language practice plus 80 minutes of reading instruction and is designed to be used after completing Level 1.

  • In the first 10 lessons of Level 2, you begin to use the past tense. Structures become more complex, and informal speech is introduced. Conversations become fuller, and you learn to discuss business and social activities. As you progress, vocabulary is expanded, and fluency increases.
  • The next 10 lessons of Level 2 allow you to further combine and build upon known elements and produce longer and more complex sentences.
  • In the final 10 lessons of Level 2, you've doubled your vocabulary and have several hundred structures to draw upon. Reading lessons are included after Lesson 30. These lessons, which total about 80 minutes, give you practice reading Arabic and provide you with insight into Arab culture, common expressions, and a broad look at things you'll see when visiting an Arabic-speaking country. A reading booklet to be used with the audio reading lessons is included. Also included is a user's guide.

Good, could be so much better

I wish there were more options for learning Arabic out there. As it stands, this is one of the better courses out of a very weak field. The main problem I had with the course was the lack of a transcription of the dialogues. This method is fine for Spanish or Italian, where there aren't many sounds that are foreign to an English speaker. Arabic has so many of them that it's very, very hard to learn simply by audio. By lesson 10 I hit a wall that I wasn't able to go past, even though I've also been working with other Arabic materials. With a transcription I would bounce the rating up a star across the board.
