Publisher's summary

Lieutenant Eve Dallas returns in a fast-paced new novel from #1 New York Times bestselling author J. D. Robb.

Nature versus nurture...

The shots came quickly, silently, and with deadly accuracy. Within seconds, three people were dead at Central Park's ice skating rink. The victims: a talented young skater, a doctor, and a teacher. As random as random can be.

Eve Dallas has seen a lot of killers during her time with the NYPSD, but never one like this. After reviewing security videos, it becomes clear that the victims were killed by a sniper firing a tactical laser rifle, who could have been miles away when the trigger was pulled. And though the locations where the shooter could have set up seem endless, the list of people with that particular skill set is finite: police, military, professional killer.

Eve's husband, Roarke, has unlimited resources - and genius - at his disposal. And when his computer program leads Eve to the location of the sniper, she learns a shocking fact: There were two - one older, one younger. Someone is being trained by an expert in the science of killing, and they have an agenda. Central Park was just a warm-up. And as another sniper attack shakes the city to its core, Eve realizes that though we're all shaped by the people around us, there are those who are just born evil....

Gripping

I am amazed, this is book 43 in the Death series and J. D. Robb keeps coming up with new ideas. Most series go stale at about book 25 but not Robb’s.

In this story we have a sniper on the loose. All of Dallas’s staff is on the case along with a new person, Lowenbaum, a weapons’ expert. He is head of the SWAT squad and is acting as a weapons consultant for Dallas. We might have a new member of the squad, a female uniformed officer named Shelby. To lighten the story, we have Bella’s birthday party; the usual banter with Summerset and Rourke is redecorating the house.

The book is well written and fast paced. The plot winds around and snaps at the reader. The suspense builds during the book and one just cannot put the book down. Robb has a way of writing that grabs the reader’s attention and holds it until the last word. Robb mixes humor with murder to prevent the reader from becoming overwhelmed by the violence. I think it is best to read this series in order so one can get to know all the characters that weave in and out of the various books. I cannot wait for the next book in the series.

Susan Erickson does an excellent job narrating the series. I am so glad the publisher kept Erickson as the narrator for the entire series. Erickson is a classically trained actress and an award winning audiobook narrator.

Corpse-man Really!!!

Would you try another book from J. D. Robb and/or Susan Ericksen?

I have listen to them all. They allow me the time to complete work while listening. The main characters are fun, you could see them as friends. I enjoy the back story the characters, and especially the voices which allows you to know who is talking without identifying them, the interaction and byplay is what life should always be. To many people take themselves to seriously.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Dallas and Roarke the interaction, their strengths and support of each other

Which scene was your favorite?

anything that make me laugh after a intense situation.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Apprentice in Death?

None - just pronounce Corpsman correct. (Kor-men)

Any additional comments?

I listen to all suspense novels by Nora Roberts - and all JD Robb in death series, the over expressed Sex is in too much detail and not necessary, we have imaginations. Corpsman and pronouncing it "Corpse-man" is disrespectful. If you took the time to look it up you would see that it is pronounced (Kor-men). Susan normally does a fabulous job, except for the Corpse-man.

An Evolving Eve

This is going to be one of my favorite books of the series. Eve is finally letting go of the past and feeling confident enough to look forward to the future. The author has learned that we require lots of Roarke, plenty of Peabody and bits of all the other favorite and colorful characters to be satisfied readers. The narrator was perfect - but then she has given life to this story. Definitely a 9 out of 10 stars.

They Never Disappoint

I always look forward to the newest Dallas and Roarke adventure as they are so very entertaining. This one as dark as the subject matter is did not disappoint. The relationships between Dallas and all her friends continue to grow and bring light into the dark. I don't know if it is because I look so forward to them but I feel like I continually feel as if the current one is the best one yet. That is what I feel about this one. The best one yet.
