Publisher's Summary

Predictive modeling uses statistics in order to predict outcomes. However, predictive modeling can be applied to events regardless of time of occurrence. When it comes to the applications of predictive modeling, techniques are used in various fields including algorithmic trading, uplift modeling, archaeology, health care, customer relationship management, and many others. This book covers the predictive modeling process with fundamental steps of the process, data preprocessing, data splitting and crucial steps of model tuning and improving model performance.

Further, the book will introduce you to the most common classification and regression techniques including logistic regression which is widely used when it comes to the finding the probability of event success or event failure. You will get to know the common predictive modeling techniques as well such as stepwise regression, polynomial regression, and ridge regression which will help you when you are dealing with the data that suffers from very common multicollinearity where independent variables are highly correlated.

What you will learn in Applied Predictive Modeling:

  • Most common predictive modeling techniques
  • Types of regression models
  • The overall predictive modeling process
  • Fundamental steps to effective and highly accurate predictive modeling
  • How to build predictive model with logistic regression with code listings
  • How to build predictive model using Python
  • How to enhance your model performance
  • Parameters for increasing the overall predictive power
  • How to handle class imbalance
  • Common causes of poor model performance

Very informative

Fabulous! I purchased this book both for the study of data science and addressing a specific regression problem at work. Unlike more introductory textbooks, this book explains more practicalities as to which tests or techniques are better suited for the situation. It helps to know better what to do when the data is not ideal. This jam-packed book takes you under the hood with step by step instructions using Applied Predictive Modeling. You will discover easy to follow applied predictive analytic techniques and processes that can instantly expand your modeling capability. Plus you'll discover simple routines that serve as a checklist you repeat next time you need a specific model. Even better, you'll discover practitioner tips, work with real data, and receive suggestions that will speed up your progress. So even if you're completely stressed out by data, you'll still find in this book tips, suggestions, and helpful advice that will ease your journey through the data science maze. This is a very applied and hands-on book. It guides the reader through many examples that serve to illustrate the main points, and it raises possible issues and considerations that are oftentimes overlooked or not sufficiently reflected upon. For instance, the way we model as simple of a data as a calendar date can have a significant impact on the kind of analysis and predictive model we choose. This is the kind of information that is often not discussed in other modeling books and can sometimes take years of practical experience before its impact is fully appreciated. Overall, the book is well-structured and gave me the full knowledge of applied predictive modeling and the technique on how to analyze the data which is very useful for my job. It's a must-have book for every data analyst, student, applied researcher, and IT professional.

One of the best books I own

This book one of the best books I own on the topic of prediction. I say that even though I don't make extensive use of machine learning models, and even though there is not a single time series model in this book (when most of my work is with time series). The applied focus and wealth of practical experience on real problems is an invaluable set of insights for anyone building predictive models, in any field, and using any algorithm.

Wonderful information learned

As a basic introduction to “Predictive Modelling”, this works well. It is easy to follow and isn’t as full of hype as many introductions to this topic. If you are already employed in this area than the book might well be a bit too basic for you but if you are curious about this subject this book could be very useful. It is quite short but it doesn't contain much padding.

A great guide for businesses

A great guide for businesses. Other predictive modeling techniques commonly used by financial organizations and companies include time series data mining, decision trees, and Bayesian analysis. Organizations and companies take predictive modeling advantages in terms of big data through various predictive modeling measures highly capable of better understanding of how customers engage with their various products. In other words, companies are able to identify potential risks as well as various opportunities for companies.
