Publisher's Summary

Appleby Farm was originally published as a four-part serial. This is the complete story in one package.

Freya Moorcroft has wild red hair, mischievous green eyes, a warm smile and a heart of gold. She's been happy working at the café round the corner from Ivy Lane allotments, and her romance with her new boyfriend is going well, she thinks, but a part of her still misses the beautiful rolling hills of her Cumbrian childhood home: Appleby Farm.

Then a phone call out of the blue and a desperate plea for help change everything....

The farm is in financial trouble, and it's taking its toll on the aunt and uncle who raised Freya. Heading home to lend a hand, Freya quickly learns that things are worse than she first thought. As she summons up all her creativity and determination to turn things around, Freya is surprised as her own dreams for the future begin to take shape.

Love makes the world go round, according to Freya. Not money. But will saving Appleby Farm and following her heart come at a price?

Appleby Farm is a charming, funny and romantic story from the author of best-selling Ivy Lane.

Enjoyable but not riveting!

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

I did enjoy the book, it passed away the time while I was driving to and from work or out walking, but it didn't have me dying to hear what happens next - it wasn't a 'couldn't put it down' type of a book. The funniest part was Liz's radio presenter sister, should have used her more - she brightened up the book.

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

The ending was how I thought the ending was gong to be

What about Colleen Prendergast’s performance did you like?

I really like Colleen Prendergast as a narrator and as someone else commented, I mostly chose this book because I enjoy her style of narrating.

Did Appleby Farm inspire you to do anything?

It has inspired me to start listening to a different type of book for a change!! I'm getting a bit sick of the 'chic lit' books, they all start sounding the same after a while.

Stuck in the mud

Would you try another book written by Cathy Bramley or narrated by Colleen Prendergast?

Yes. I enjoyed Ivy Lane also written by Cathy Bramley and I was looking forward to this audio book. But I was sadly disappointed by the naration.

What other book might you compare Appleby Farm to, and why?

The story was good. It ranks with Lucy Diamond or Carole Matthews. Chick lit is chick lit. Boy, Girl, complications, happy ending. Easy listening without stress.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

I have read Ivy Lane also narrated by Colleen Prendergast and really enjoyed it. Sadly the narration on this was very disappointing. Heavy and stilted

If this book were a film would you go see it?

Probably without Colleen Predergast.

Any additional comments?

I don't enjoy being negative. I usally enjoy my chick lit, light reading for bed time. On this instance I don't think Colleen Prendergast enjoyed this story. I don't think she believed it. I found this surprising as she read Ivy lane and did a very good job.

Sweet and comforting

Freya is getting a bit bored with life, she is never one to settle down; so when her Uncle has a heart attack, she heads back to his farm to help out.

We follow Freya through romantic and familial heartbreak and egg her on to make it work.

Farmers

I enjoyed Ivy Lane and love Colleen Prendergast as a narrator, but I found the idealisation of animal farming in this book really hard to move past. The farmers are heart broken at the thought of cows going to slaughter for TB, but what do they think usually happens when they sell them? it's a beef farm. They all go to slaughter. I hate how the farmer refers to it as being put to sleep. No, slaughter is a violent process not euthanasia. They talk about how the dairy calfs drink their mother's milk and they take the rest. How idyllic! In real life calfs are separated from their mothers and the males are slaughtered for veal. The dairy industry is a bloody industry.
I persevered with the book for a while, but just couldn't put up with the pro badger culling, pro animal abuse stance of the book any longer so requested a refund.

Tedious

Not one of Bramley’s better books
Really slow and limited on story with boring characters
