Publisher's summary

Being a member of the Elite Hunter Command imperils Joy in more ways than one. In their latest clash with Othersiders, the army of monsters nearly wiped them out. Apex City is safe for now. But within the city barriers, Joy must wage a different kind of war.

The corrupt and powerful PsiCorps is determined to usurp the Hunters as chief defenders of Apex City, and Joy is now squarely in their crosshairs. Unused to playing political games, she has very few people she can truly trust - not even Josh, her first friend in Apex City, who broke up with her when it became too dangerous for a Psimon to be dating a Hunter.

Then Josh comes to Joy for help. He fears that Abigail Drift, the head of PsiCorps, will soon use him in her twisted experiments designed to empower PsiCorps and render Hunters superfluous - a scheme that's already killed off dozens of Psimons. Joy manages to smuggle Josh to safety, but he cannot evade Drift forever.

As Joy faces ever more powerful Othersiders, she is helped by the most surprising ally imaginable - the same Folk Mage she once met in battle on the train to Apex City. But can Joy trust the most cunning and treacherous of all Othersiders?

In the thrilling finale to Mercedes Lackey's New York Times best-selling trilogy, Joy must risk everything to end a brutal war before she loses all she's ever loved.

Great story

Great story and great series. I just wish their was more to the series. Fun listen though a bit to short as my only real issue. I like the basic physics to help her. I wish their was a prequel series to show a lot of the beginning stories.

Not as good as the first two

For some reason, the audio performer who seemed ok before annoyed me so much (weird cadence and pauses) that I had a hard time concentrating on the actual story.

The story itself was okay but not nearly as interesting as the first two books—primarily because the relationships between the characters felt so much less developed. Most of the focus was on the various battles and skirmishes. I can only stand so many “fighting monsters” scenes.

I’m assuming there’ll be a fourth book because it ends on somewhat of a cliffhanger. If there is, I’m still interested enough in the Joy’s story and the world in which the story is set to read on.

"Meh" at best

I thought the concept was really cool, so I listened to all three. I have to say, I'm really disappointed in how it played out. I am not one to know what is going to happen or "who done it", if you will, but I found the writing to be so blatantly obvious in its setup for "big reveals" that I was frustrated in the main character for being so dim-witted. I knew who was going to die chapters before they did, I knew who the Big Bad was before I was halfway through this book, and was generally underwhelmed with the "look at me, I'm so sneaky and throwing a curveball and here is where it will go and you'll never see it coming in 3, 2, 1, now!" style of writing (and narration, to be frank) that I found myself listening out of passive habit more than interest. Not to mention the blatant use of deus ex machina to finish the final battle. It was a really big let-down, to be honest. It felt like the writer was just trying to finish the book by the deadline after leaving it to the last minute.
Additionally, the reader's choices in emphasis came off as really forced and was off-putting. She also had effectively the same voice for everyone who wasn't a female human, which got quite confusing at times.
In short, there were a LOT of great concepts that fell incredibly flat; it was disappointing.

listen to this

This is the conclusion of the three book series, and I have tremendously enjoyed all three. I believe that you will too. Mercedes Lackey has, as with the other two, provided great detail in an intriguing and interesting story. It feels real as you listen to it.

Perfect End to the Trilogy

Apex had a very typical Mercedes Lackey ending. I will explain more later.

What I love about Mercedes Lackey is how the heroin discovers she has it in her all along to change the world. Joy without a doubt has changed the world around her.

I love how her and the lavender mage work together to bridge their worlds. The performance does a good job of differentiating voices just enough, and also conveying the emotion. You can here the panic and pain in Joy's voice when each new blow comes. This final chapter of the trilogy does a beautiful job of bring Joy into her full potential and becoming a leader in her own right.

By a very Mercedes Lackey ending, I mean that it is an ending that does not truly end the story. There is so much potential for Joy's future and Apex's future and she leaves that for you to imagine.

The Story Continues

I enjoyed the third installment of the Hunter series. The pace of the story kept me turning the pages. Suspected villains confirmed, relationships reaffirmed and the world setting made wider.

Great ending to a great series!!

Not going to lie, the first 2 or 3 chapters were so slow & different from the first two books that it took me a bit to get into this book. I'm glad I did because it had an epic ending!

Ending felt rushed and I feel like I need more closure.

Overall a good read but I wasn’t satisfied with the ending of the story. I enjoyed the total series and I am hoping for another one.
