Loved this book as a look into how American Indians life was not so different as mine

Ms. Erdrich never disappoints! What a delightful, heartwarming and heartbreaking novel. Beautifully written and narrated.

Direct from the storyteller

The stories that Louise Erdrich tells are always always immersive. I’ve now listened to her voice telling me two and these interwoven stories — I just love these dearly. I especially appreciate her stories that extend back and move forward like this one. I also (big smile) appreciated the reminder at the end to download the pdf! It was there at the beginning too but I needed to rush into the telling so glad there was that additional reminder. Yes!

Nobody Like Her

I like all her authentic references. She shares all the traditions of her ancestors. She makes one long for traditions of one’s own. I have memories of my mother smoking, reading and burning our food. I learned to incorporate charcoal into my diet.

A calm view of native life

Read by author this history of one family is heartbreaking yet soothing to listen to.

A Magical tale of Names and Colors

In this incredibly complex and laytered tale, Erdrich leads readers through generations of family, even including the perspective of a dog, to bring an amazing story full circle. The prose is smooth and intricate, and the images it conjures are sometimes very real world, and at other times chasing the meanings of words and the taste, scent and touch of things too often ignored in the passing of time. One thing is certain, you will never forget Blue Prairie Woman, Klaus (either one of them) or Wendigo Dog. One of the most satisfying books I've read in a long time.

The audio performance was by the author, who did a spectacular job of bringing her characters to life and giving them their own voices. Highly recommended.

Varied and always captivating.

A multi-generational story (from the westward expansion and conflict to now) of the Ojibwe, their dogs, & the whites their lives collide with. One of the best in Magical Realism (realistic drama with a light touch of fantasy).
Perfect reading by Erdich herself.

An interwoven story

The story line might be easier to follow in print, as there seemed to be a lot of back & forth in time. While Ms Erdrich voice is soothing it is also monotone. I’m sure the book would be excellent.
