Publisher's Summary

Romilly had worked hard for her stunning house in one of Bristol's most fashionable suburbs. She adored her daughter and handsome husband, and sure, life was sometimes exhausting - but nothing that a large glass of wine couldn't fix.

But then, as deep-buried insecurities surfaced, everything started to unravel. A glass of wine became a bottle; one bottle became two. Once, Romilly's family were everything to her. Now, after years of hiding the drinking, she must finally admit that she has found another love....

Heart breaking

I found it heartbreaking and well written. I think if you had drinking illness or have had to stop drinking go some reason, you would feel the pain of the main character and the upset it causes to everyone round the person with the illness.

A real eye opener, read wonderfully by the author

I read this on Kindle a couple of years ago and decided to try it on Audio-book. I absolutely love this book. It's incredible and really shows you how damaging addiction can be. I love the depth of character and how shockingly realistic the whole situation is. I have to say, having a dysfunctional relationship with food some of is resonated a lot more than I would have liked. I adore all the characters. I love that i developed an emotional attachment with all of them and i found myself wanting to shout at the story in frustration and anguish. Amanda's ability to make her stories so real is true testament to what an amazing gift she has. I love all her books, but this one, it stayed with me. Eve now I think about it. Even better that on Audible Amanda has narrated it herself and she has such a wonderfully soothing voice that it's an absolute pleasure to listen to. She makes it come alive in a way I could have never imagined. I'd thoroughly recommend reading this if you haven't already.

A really great story introducing you to the reality of being an alcoholic.

I thought it was quite slow to start with and that it was going to be a little boring. How wrong. It is an excellent story and it gave me a better understanding of the terrible life long battle some people have with alcohol and how it literally destroys theirs and their families lives. Great book. Thank you

Perceptive telling of a difficult tale.

This is a compelling, insightful story of the awfulness of alcoholism for one family. It neither sugars, nor overdramatises the issues. It does not pull punches, nor fall into cliched romance. It loses a star due to being a little overwritten. One example of this is when the protagonist popped to a shop for some milk and "the coins were nestling in her hand"! There was quite a lot of this. I think I would have found it more off-putting if I had been reading the book. Thankfully, the narrator read in a very straightforward way, such that between us, I found could largely ignore extraneous stuff.

Wonderful

What a fabulous book. Sensitively but powerfully explored one woman's fight with alcohol, from both her and her daughters point of view. Heartbreaking at times but couldn't put down. Read fabulously by the author herself. It's my first time reading a book by this author, looking forward to hearing more

An insightful, accurate insight to the workings of a brain, of a woman, just doing her best to survive

This is beautifully, sympathetically written. Empathy given to all those affected by alcoholism, truely compelling.

Tough subject

The topic of alcoholism is always tough. Prowse did a great job! However for a first time reader, I would recommend another book by like her Perfect Daughter. If I had read this book before Prowses others, I doubt I would have continued reading her books to be honest.
