Gabe is the best character

This book isn't as good as the first. It's about 60% social drama and 40% plot. Love all the plot but the social drama got tiring and took up the first half so the book dragged until the middle. But the second half is exciting and it makes me interested to see how this will end. If nothing else, read this book to meet Gabe. He's the best character in the series!

A sequel every bit as good as the original

Many of the questions I had after listening to Book 1 were answered and all sorts of new ones were posed, which, since this is a trilogy, are not all answered by the last page. I'm particularly interested to see what new powers appear in Book 3 after meeting some new and powerful folks in Anomalies and learning more about the mysterious government agency that appears to be at the heart of this fringe world the anomalies exist in.

This is a very different book than Echoes, but in the best way possible. The plot throws the characters we already met into new and dangerous situations while also introducing a whole cast of other interesting folks. Along the way, we learn more about Laura, her relationships, and even a bit more about her powers. If you liked Echoes, you'll enjoy Anomalies.

A perfect middle installment with creative heroes!

This book went by so quickly in a good way! It’s the perfect middle installment in a trilogy: Anomalies jumped right into the action after the events of the Echoes and left the reader with the perfect setup for the final book, Heroes.

I read Anomalies in hybrid form: ebook and audiobook. I enjoyed the narrator’s performance in both books! Her voice is pleasant while still sounding like a 17 year old, and her character voices add flavor without being distracting.

No actual spoilers ahead, but I’m going to mention what some of the characters’ abilities are without mentioning specific events in this book. I think most, if not all of the abilities were briefly mentioned in Echoes.

I loved how the author explored the limits of the anomalies’ abilities, especially with Laura. I appreciated how the the abilities are either fresh takes on superpowers we’re used to seeing (like Gabe’s mind reading and the twins’ teleportation) or abilities that feel completely original like Veronica’s. I think it would’ve been easy to fall into the trap of having a recycled Justice League or Avengers type of group, but the author made this ragtag group of anomalies feel unique.
It also helps that they all have varying levels of control over their abilities, and the abilities themselves have varying degrees of power. Even with the supernatural elements in this series, it feels more realistic than other YA series I’ve enjoyed because these aren’t trained fighters and spies— they’re normal kids trying to find advantages wherever they can against an almost omniscient enemy.

Some vague spoilers here:

Adding to the realistic “they aren’t trained spies” thing… I love how the characters spent most of this book failing. They fought tooth and nail for little successes and planned to the best of their abilities, but again and again, they played into Alice’s traps. This book did a great job of making the villain truly intimidating, and her scheming also pushed the anomalies to use their abilities in ways they never expected—especially Laura, who finds that her seemingly useless echoes offer her a power of truth and clarity shared by no one else. I’m so excited to read the third book and see how it all ends!
