Publisher's summary

Anne Frank is the most well-known victim of the Holocaust. In 1945, at the age of 15, she died at Bergen-Belsen concentration camp, becoming one of the six million Jews who were murdered in Europe under the Nazi regime. But through her writing, her memory lives on. Her Diary of a Young Girl remains one of the most widely read nonfiction books in the world, and was described as "one of the greatest books of the last century". Anne started keeping a diary shortly before she went into hiding with her family in 1942, and over the course of two years she honed her craft as a writer, documenting the details of their daily lives alongside her personal reflections, fears, and aspirations. By chance, the majority of her writings were saved after the family was arrested and in 1947, after much deliberation, her father, Otto, oversaw the publication of the first edition of her diary in the Netherlands. Within a decade, it had become an international best seller.

First adapted for both stage and screen in the 1950s, awareness and readership of Anne's diary continued to grow and its author became a household name, gradually acquiring something of a symbolic status. Seventy years on, The Diary of a Young Girl still resonates just as powerfully with young and old readers alike. Jemma Saunders goes beyond Anne's diary to fill in the gaps about her family history, her life before she went into hiding, and her final months at Bergen-Belsen concentration camp. A sobering tale, Anne Frank's story is one that will continue to inspire for decades to come.

Jemma J Saunders works at the University of Birmingham. She is also the author of The Holocaust: History in an Hour.

Great story , but…..

For some reason the narrator keeps referring to Anne as Anna .. how can you get the main character’s name wrong ?

Pairs Well With The Diary

This is a good little biography. Saunders efficiently summarizes Frank's short life up to, during, and after the Annexe, as well as the growth of her fame. This audiobook might be best suited for teens: partially from how Saunders' wrote it, and partially from how Daniel read it. The narration is so soothingly British you'd think she was reading a fairy tale, "Once upon a time, during the apocalypse...."

not what I thought it was, but still alright

This is an overview of the events of Anne Frank's life, not a narration of her diary.

It was a pleasant and informative listen.

Deep

I read this as a preteen in the 70’s. My heart broke for her and all Jewish lives lost, tortured and the families.
Listening to the reading was a treat & very well done. I lived it with them in the performance of Joanna Daniels

Excellent biography

This book about the life of Anne Frank is very informative. It is also mixed with sadness as I knew her fate at the same time as I was enjoying her development and discoveries.

It reminds me that each person has a purpose in life. She definitely fulfilled hers.

Not what I expected

It was not at all what I expected, but it was good nonetheless.

It was interesting to hear another viewpoint on Anne Frank and her legacy.

Wow

Honestly, after living in the U.S.A. for the past few years, this was a horrifying story. I was able to relate with the characters in such a way that I was able to imagine the social aspects of life that are discriminated against today as if it was being Jewish then. A horrifying dystopian story. I felt such loss listening to this story. I thought I had read everything about Anne Frank, but I still learned something here. I would recommend this to anyone interested, even vaguely.

Anne Frank

Very good book. Never read her diary. But this told me everything I wanted to know about her.

An avid Anne Frank supporter

I, as have many, have read (many times) the book The Diary of Anne Frank, seen several (from the original and forward) of the movies. I’m so saying the information in this short book was very informative and interesting, giving me information I hadn’t known. I have seen one of the traveling exhibitions and will soon be visiting the Anne Frank House. I feel I am going in with more knowledge.
