Publisher's summary

After Mason and his crew are neutralized, the Chairman retaliates by sending two teams of hitmen to capture Anna and eliminate Mason, Jackie, Phoebe, and anyone else standing in his way. The hit squads are no match for the Blazes, Anna's foster parents, and a handful of gifted town folks who come to Anna's aid. Here is what happened to one squad:

Excerpt from CHAMPIONS

The Suburban pulled up to the roadblock and stopped. A tall, athletic man wearing a trench coat stepped out and approached Burt and Gary.
"Sorry, the road is closed from this point on. There's a gas leak that could set this county up in flames," said Gary.
The man laughed. "Gas leak, my ass!" He produced an automatic weapon from beneath his trench coat while the other two men sprinted forward with weapons drawn.
Gary sent a mental message to Burt. "I'm going to wipe these guys' minds and send them home like helpless toddlers."
"Let me have some fun with them first," insisted Burt. "I want to levitate this vehicle and give it the dryer treatment."
Gary recalled the last time Burt give someone the dryer treatment. It was too funny to stop him from giggling.
"What are you laughing at?" demanded the first man.
"I'm sorry," apologized Gary. "I assume you are heading to the Blaze farm?"
"Yeah," sneered the man, "Not that it's any of your business."
"My apologies, gentlemen. The farm is about 20 minutes from here, the first house on your right. Don't let the rose bushes freak you out. They are harmless."
"Great, but how do we get past this roadblock?"
"Oh dear, yes," answered Burt. "Let me help you."
Burt placed his hand on the top of the cement pillar blocking the road, removing all the weight from the pillar. He then nuzzled the barricade aside, creating a space for the Suburban to pass by.
"Here you go," smiled Burt. "Good luck at the Blazes!"
The mercenaries were leery about the sudden change in Burt and Gary. They reentered their vehicle and drove past the opening in the roadblock. When the car was 10 yards away from the roadblock, Burt went to work.
Using his mind, Burt levitated the Suburban 10 feet above the road. The driver panicked and floored the accelerator, causing the tires to spin while the vehicle remained suspended in the air, going nowhere. The mercenaries brandished their weapons and racked in a round, ready to fire. Burt smiled and began drawing tiny circles in the air in front of him. The small circles caused the Suburban to spin and rotate on its sides, roof, and tires in dizzying rotations. This was an example of the dryer treatment at its best.
Since only the driver of the vehicle was strapped in, the other three occupants were tossed about the large interior of the Suburban like loose clothes in a clothes dryer. Screams of terror and pain filled the air as the shooters pleaded for mercy. Arms, legs, ribs, necks, and heads were bashed and broken against the heavy assault rifles and loose objects as each rotation caused further injury to the hapless victims. Burt continued to spin the car, changing speed and direction until there was total silence. To add insult to injury, Burt flipped the Suburban roof side down and pushed the vehicle 20 feet into the air before letting it fall flat on the roof. He then righted the car and examined the carnage.
The only person to survive this ordeal without severe injury was the driver. As Gary wiped the memories of the mercenaries, Burt spoke with the driver.
"We are letting you and your crew return to whoever sent you. This is the third assault on our community in less than 48 hours. You people are 0-3 and have already lost eleven people, while we have lost no one. None of you will escape Taylorsville alive if you come back. Understood?"
