I drove myself out of New York City, where a man shot himself in front of me. He was a gluttonous man and when his blood came out it looked like the blood of a pig.

That’s a cruel thing to think, I know. He did it in a restaurant where I was having dinner with another man, another married man.

Do you see how this is going? But I wasn’t always that way.

I am depraved. I hope you like me.

Critic reviews

"Like a series of grenades exploding." (Marian Keyes)

"Wow. Dark, hypnotic and horrifying, with a central protagonist in Joan who demands your deepest empathy despite every transgression, it’s brilliantly written and expertly done. I loved it." (Harriet Tyce, best-selling author of Blood Orange and The Lies You Told)

"I don’t think there is a writer alive who writes about the interior lives of women with the raw truth and intensity [Taddeo] does.... Fearless, sexy, brutal and just forensically observed. She is extraordinary." (Jojo Moyes)

The White Oleander of my 30s

I read White Oleander at 15. It was the most raw, poetic and beautiful book I had read in my life. I left a huge impression on me. Time has faded some of most of the words from my mind but not the feeling. I could feel the words with me for years comforting in my pain. This is the first time that I've read something that has moved me like that after all that time. I can't put into short sentences how this book has moved me except to say, I have been touched in ways that I have not been for years.

What an incredible book!!!!

This is the most incredibly powerful , beautifully written book, read with perfection by Emma Roberts. Lisa Thaddeo’s book speaks to the animal in all of us, good, bad, beautiful and savage. Her writing is magnificent, the story so unusual but beautifully woven. I loved this book so much. Emma Roberts could not have done a better job of conveying this story. Five stars from top to bottom.

Incredible, best book in a long time

I found this book so compelling, the voice so clear, the tension so tight. I read it over a few days and have already started it again. I never do that. The narration is wonderful too, adds rather than detracts (as is often the case).
