The Anglo-Saxon, or Anglian, period is the least well-understood period of York’s long history. While written sources describe a city which re-emerges as an important ecclesiastical centre, a seat of governance, a place of scholarship and learning, a commercial entrepôt and a draw for ‘divers peoples,’ physical evidence for any of this has been hard to find. This book endeavours to pull together, and make accessible, the archaeological evidence for this elusive period and to provide a glimpse of the people who dwelt in York in the centuries between the departure of the Romans and the arrival of the Vikings.

Ailsa Mainman studied archaeology at the University of Sheffield where she obtained her PhD, followed by an MSc at the University of York. She worked for York Archaeological Trust for many years, as part of the team working on the Coppergate, Fishergate and Hungate projects. Teaching adult education has long been an interest, most recently at the Centre for Lifelong Learning at the University of York, and she is a Research Associate at both the Department of Archaeology and at York Archaeological Trust. She now works freelance.
