Editorial reviews

Andy Warhol became a leading figure of the Pop Art movement that rose to prominence in the 1960s. By blurring the lines between high art and mass culture, Warhol changed the perception of what art could be. His art was controversial in his day, and his legend continues to inspire debate. This iMinds biography encapsulates the colorful life of Warhol, born Andrej Varhola to working-class Czech immigrants, and focuses on his commerce-based artistic career and status as an icon. Elouise Rothwell performs with a brisk manner, remarkably managing to mix a list of Warhol's career achievements alongside astute art criticism.

Publisher's summary

Learn about Andy Warhol with iMinds insightful audio knowledge series.

Andy Warhol came to public attention as one of the leading lights of the Pop Art movement of the 1960s. Since then his art and legacy have polarised art critics and the public alike. This thin, pale, asexual man in a silver wig has been described as both a genius and a charlatan. His art, and maybe more importantly his approach to art, have taken him out of the galleries and museums into the public arena. Love or loath his work most agree that he broke down the divide between high art and mass culture.

Crucial to Warhol is this paradox: As an artist who approached art from its commercial perspective he pointed out how art is debased by money. That for all the theorizing and romance, art is a commodity in our consumer society.

quick overview

Don't really know Andy Warhol? He made a big enough impact on Western culture that it's worth your time to know at least what's in this quick listen. You could read more information on a website, but this is here, quick and easy to listen, so why wait. If you've heard his name but don't know his story, this is a quick sound byte to get you started.

There is so much more to Warhol than you can catch in a 10 minute narration. And likely 4 opinions to each fact. This narration sticks to a very brief outline of his life - his greatest work of art.

Famous Pop Artist of the 1960s

Great seven-minute introduction to Andy Warhol. Most of us have seen the famous screen prints of the soup cans . . . and of Marilyn Monroe . . . but many of us may not know how the artist and his art came about. Breaking down the barriers between art and the public and how art is viewed, both in galleries and in the media, Andy Warhol was a gutsy artist who believed that it was okay to make money from art, and alright to experiment with getting art out to the public. Those of us who grew up in the sixties are very familiar with Andy Warhol, but later generations are not. This glimpse of the artist will make you want to explore even more of his art and his view of what art was.

Great info, boring narrator

Informative and short, however the narrator is very boring. It's difficult to stay focused at times. I really had to force myself to listen.
