Publisher's summary

Cass Clereaux is good at two things: finding treasure and killing demons. Lying low is a close third - but not because she wants to be good at hiding. Cass is a FireSoul, one of the unlucky few to inherit a piece of a dragon's soul. On the surface, the perks are sweet - she has the power to find and steal any type of magical treasure, including the powers of other supernaturals.

But it doesn't come without a price; stealing powers requires that she kill, and others would destroy her if they discover what she is. In a world full of magic, hiding her powers is the only way to survive. Finding magical artifacts is the only ways to pay the bills. But it's a dangerous job when you can't use your magic.

When Aidan Merrick, the most powerful shifter in the city, hires her to find an ancient scroll, she doesn't want to take the job. His immense amount of power reminds her of too much of murky memories from a past she can't remember. But she has no choice. The scroll will reveal what she is. And if anyone finds out, she's dead.

Ancient Magic features kick-butt heroines, a hot hero, and otherworldly adventure.

Great Magical Adventure

This was definitely a quality magical/fantasy fiction with a lot to brag about. Everything from the author's take on magic, the world in which the story takes place, and the story line and theme itself were all interesting, exciting, and enjoyable. I listened to the entire audiobook in one day.

The main character, Cass, and her two female companions wake up in the middle of a field with few memories other than an instinctual urge to run. There is only one thing they do know about themselves... They are FireSouls, feared and hunted by all other magical beings for their ability to steal the magical abilities of others.

After meeting Aiden, a very wealthy and powerful magical being, she learns of an ancient scroll that reveals the identities and weaknesses of the most powerful magical beings in the world, including FireSouls. She works with Aiden in the hunt for this scroll with the intention of destroying it before anyone can read it, including Aiden. However, what she didn't expect were the feeling that both her and Aiden would develop for each other, or what other powerful magical beings might be looking for the same scroll...

The narration of this book was solid and fit the main character and the story very well. Definitely looking forward to similar performances in the future.

I received a free copy of this audiobook from the author, publisher, or narrator in exchange for an unbiased review. I was NOT required to write a positive review and this reflects my honest opinion of the work.

Flat Characters, Poor Writing

From the opening chapter, I could tell this book was going to be a bother. I got 3/4 through and DNF.

It starts off with three teenaged women (magical and potentially deadly) waking up in a field near each other with no memories of themselves.

In the intro alone, there was SO MUCH TELLING. The author really needs to take more writing workshops or creative writing classes and learn to show her story. I read on, hoping she was just a terrible editor and the later chapters would show more development.

They didn't. The Telling continues to an absurd degree: "I was afraid" vs "My nerves were wound so tight, I almost leapt over the railing of the ship when Aidan's hand came down on my shoulder."

Speaking of Aidan ... He's an absurd character. Super rich, super handsome, super powerful, super polite, super ... flat. Where are the imperfections and restrictions? Why does the MC throw around words like "falling for him" and "liked him a lot" when "Let's check those rocks over there!" is the extent of their interactions?

In fact, why can't she just acknowledge once that he's hot and shut the hell up about it and go do her job to make sure she and her sisters stay free of the "mysterious" evil they escaped ten years before? 50% of this book is just repeats of "He's hot" and "He smells so good!" <<<<< Literally! No showing!

If you combined the TV shows Charmed and Birds of Prey, you'd probably end up with something that feels like this book. I recommend you skip and maybe try a later series by the author when she has had time to develop more.

Surprisingly Good!

Let me start by saying, this is the third book by this particular narrator I've listened to and I think it's her best one yet. That said, it sort of broke my brain going from one set of characters to another.

I enjoyed Ancient Magic a lot more than I thought I would, and now I'm wondering when the rest come out on audio. I was mostly attracted to it by the awesome cover, and while the prologue was a touch boring, as soon as chapter 1 started, I was hooked. I absolutely loved the characters, the way the whole firesoul thing worked, and the magical towns in the middle of our world. I liked that the character was powerful but had good reason not to use her magic. It made each usage have weight to it. I also liked the coffee shop. It was incredibly clever.

There were many times I found myself thinking, "OMG did that seriously just happen?"

I seriously recommend this book to anyone who likes magic. It's a straight up adventure book with a touch of hot (non-shirtless) shifter romance. One of the character's even remarks on how the hot shifter keeps his clothes on. LOL

Nothing terribly graphic happens as far as their relationship goes so it comes off as nice and sweet. I'm actually pleased at the hint of romance and that it didn't degrade into extremely graphic sex.

Keeping secrets

this book was very good and well written. I enjoyed the each character but my favorite is Aiden. I have thing for Irish and Scottish characters. Basically the story is about three young women who do not have memories for the first 15 years. they have bonded as family and have a major secret. They are Fire Souls which are considered very dangerous because they can still others magic. So they have been keeping this a secret. they work together taking old ancient magic relics to make a duplicate before they put them back, They are usually hired to handle these jobs. In comes Aiden, who is the origin and has a lot of magic. He is looking for ancient scroll and needs help finding it. this scroll was written by monks and has information about different magic welders/shifters etc. The three sisters are afraid that the scroll may contain their secret. So they agree to help Aiden. Will they find it? Will Aiden learn their secret?

I enjoyed the story and received this book free for an honest review. I did have a little problem with the narrator but not enough that i would listen to another book.

great first book in a hopefully amazing sires!

Ancient Magic: Dragon's Gift: The Huntress, Book 1
Omg this a great book! its chalked full of magic, supernatural and great friendship, and maybe new love.
The story starts when 3 girls wake up i and have memory of their past, or even their names.
Cass is the main character and the story is pretty much told by her. She has found out that she is a Fire soul. You find out that they are not very likable, and if they are caught, she will be thrown in jail for being one. Fire souls Kill other supernaturals for their powers and are very dangerous.
But Cass is not like that, and she tires to keep her self hidden as she and her 2 “sisters” go though life hidden and using other types of magic so others do not catch on.
She is a treasure hunter, and very good at it. This is how she makes her money. There are not many items she can not find for her clients. She also runs a little magic shop with her sisters that pass the time when she is not hunting things down for he clients.
Then she meets Aiden. she totally has the hots for him, and feels amazing when he is around her. he’s very powerful and she can feel that when he is around her. Aiden hires Cass to help him find a treasure that he has been looking for. its a very powerful list of people and their magic skills. She takes the job but has to make sure she doesn’t let her crush for him get in the way of doing her job, and making sure her name, and her sisters is not on that list!.

the narrator did an excellent job bringing this story to life! she actually fit case for well!
am looking forward to getting book 2 of this sores. I can’t wait to see what happens.

I want more! Great Series Starter

Have you listened to any of Laurel Schroeder’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Yes, it is just as good. Ms. Shroeder has such a soothing voice that I cannot listen to her books right before I fall asleep because her voice lulls me into sleep then I have to rewind!

Any additional comments?

I didn't want this story to end and I look forward to the next books in the series. This book caught me up right from the beginning and made me crawl inside. It's a GREAT book when you can crawl inside. This audiobook was provided by the author, narrator, or publisher at no cost in exchange for an unbiased review courtesy of AudiobookBoom

Very Promising Supernatural Series

This is a great supernatural mystery with fun adventures and a touch of romance! The author created an interesting world with unique characters that are well developed and engaging.

Cass and her two "sisters" wake up in the middle of a field with no memory of the past. They don't remember much and choose to stick together. They do know they are Firesouls and need to hide the fact from everyone.

A handsome wealthy and powerful man named Aiden comes to ask Cass for help in finding a magical book. He is smitten by her and the attraction she feels for him is hard to ignore.

The narrator did a great job bringing the story to life. The book does not end in a cliffhanger although the story continues on the next book. I enjoyed it so much I'm going to get Mirror Mage - book 2 soon.

Start of a promising series

Time flew by and the book was finished like magic from the story. Adventure, magic users, and shifters woven together in a interesting world, I will definitely be waiting for book 2. Cass The Magic Dragon

Is there anything you would change about this book?

The characters did not connect with me. The story was well written and well read, but I could not find the magic. Cass was continuously repeating that she could not use her magic and if she did she would go to prison. I understood her problem, but the repletion became tedious.
After the conclusion to the audio book there was a generous portion of the second book in the series. Some of the problems that I found in the first book seemed to be rectified in the second.

Excellent Series Start

This was an excellent start to a series. It was Lara Croft with magic. The action is constant and the narration was perfect.
