Publisher's summary

"Entrancing...a great escape for any reader."--USA Today (four stars)

New York Times bestselling author Jenny Colgan brings us a delightful summer novel that will sweep you away to the remote Scottish island of Mure, where two very different weddings are about to take place…

On the little Scottish island of Mure—halfway between Scotland and Norway—Flora MacKenzie and her fiancé Joel are planning the smallest of “sweetheart weddings,” a high summer celebration surrounded only by those very dearest to them.

Not everyone on the island is happy about being excluded, though. The temperature rises even further when beautiful Olivia MacDonald—who left Mure ten years ago for bigger and brighter things—returns with a wedding planner in tow. Her fiancé has oodles of family money, and Olivia is determined to throw the biggest, most extravagant, most Instagrammable wedding possible. And she wants to do it at Flora’s hotel, the same weekend as Flora’s carefully planned micro-wedding.

As the summer solstice approaches, can Flora handle everyone else’s Happy Every Afters—and still get her own?

Just couldn't do it

I tried- I really did: I started it 3 times, trying to like it better, and persevered in listening, hoping it'd get more interesting, but not a chance. The story was unnecessarily long and tedious. The narrator tried to inject humor in places where there was none, and transformed the female protagonist into a 50-something year old door mat instead of the dynamic, forward-thinking person she was in the earlier books. Actually, the story did that on its own, but the narrator made it worse. The characters were so annoying it was hard to muster any sympathy for any of them- seriously, the little niece was intolerable, as was the pushy, superior neighbor Jan. The remainder of the women were pushovers, and the men unhelpful, and mostly clueless. Mure initially sounded like a lovely place, but the constant redundant descriptions kind of beat the beauty to death. 12 hours?! I couldn't stomach it.

Rough Performance

I do not like writing bad reviews- but I really enjoyed the early Mure books and this one - the narrator’s voice and inflection just made the characters seem so petty & base - I honestly cldnt even tell if it was the book or just the narrator. I painstakingly listened through bc I felt invested in the characters but it was not worth the pain. Wish I hadn’t. Sorry. And like I said - I really liked the 3 before so …

Love the storyline

That was another really lovely installment in the life of Mure and its inhabitants. I so hope the next book will bring back Saïf to the Island and they will finally be happy with Lorna.

As for the narration, it got better I think half way through the book when the narrator got more comfortable with it because for the first half, I thought I'd have to drop the audio and pick up the book. It was so annoying to listen to the exaggerated voices and it sounded so much like a reading and less like a natural conversation between people when Flora and Lorna were talking. Nobody talks like that! I did like that she took on the Scottish accent though, that was nice. By the end of the book, the narrator had acquired an ease that was so much lacking at first. Made me wonder if it was her first time narrating!

It was Okay

I love this author and will continue reading any book she puts out, but this one was a disappointment for me. It felt like she didn’t really know what to do with her characters. So much was left unresolved and I’m not even referring to the big heartbreak at the end, but that too. For some reason I thought this was the last book, but I think and hope I’m wrong.

I really love the island of Mure and the characters, but kind of felt that there were so many and she struggled with giving each of them spotlight, which is okay and understandable. But some who were prominent had barely any lines from them. I would have liked more Isla and Constantine since we were just introduced to them. I also felt like Lorna has become one note and is honestly an exhausting character. I felt the situation at the end was needless drama to be honest. And made her character just unbearable. Flora was also a bit meh this time around too. I felt like there just wasn’t enough story. I hope there is another, but in the meantime I will go back to the magic of the first few books and re-read them. If you’re a fan of the series I still suggest reading it, but it just wasn’t a favorite for me.

Lovely Close-Knit Scottish Town Drama/Love Story

A great cast of characters and enjoyable story of family, friends, and a close knit community on an island in Scotland. Drama ensues when a huge wedding is planned on the island by a former resident, affecting the whole town in many different ways.

Could not like the narrator

This is partly my fault for not realizing this was book 5 in a series. But, I'm an hour or more in and have no feeling whatsoever for the characters and cannot stand listening to this narrator any longer. Returned and do not recommend.

Poor reader. Can’t understand her for her accent

The reader need to slow down or loose some accent. Couldn’t understand enough to rate the story content.
