Uninspiring

I should probably preface my review by saying I am a writer and a writing teacher and coach, so I'm no doubt pickier than the average reader about how books are written. Though this book presents as serious and somewhat academic or authoritative, it's an informal guide. There were times when the author's point was obscured by awkward syntax or phrasing. In some cases, he introduced a topic and then went off on a seemingly random tangent before getting back to what he had introduced. In one case, he even said the opposite of what he apparently meant (although it's possible the sentence about not mixing mushrooms and tequila was written properly and mutilated by the narrator. The language said you should mix them but the implication of the context was that you shouldn't. A minute or two later it's revealed you shouldn't). It seemed as if Richard Roth didn't bother to read the book before narrating it. At times he emphasized the wrong word in the sentence, as if he was expecting it to say something different, and I found myself thinking, "Oh, the author really must have meant x." Roth's tone registered to me as amused by and even mocking of the subject matter. The writing and narration left me so uninspired I wound up listening to just a few selections before returning it.

Approved

Unbiased, clear narrator, lots of tips and tricks and information. Education on the matter is lacking and this book is a good way to get that.
