An Introduction to the Interpretation of Apocalyptic Literature

There are probably few literary works that have inspired as much controversy in the Christian community as the Revelation of John. The form of its content has led critics to denigrate its authority; interpreters to misuse its message, often to the destruction, disillusionment, or alienation of their followers; and many in the Christian church to abstain from its study. These errors are largely due to a misunderstanding of the author's message by employing an interpretation methodology that serves to promote a presupposed purpose, or answer questions that the author never intended.

The following text holds that John's purpose was to present the good news of God's grace to a church that was facing disillusionment from generations of erroneous theological teaching while experiencing persecution from virtually every authority around them. Using a literature form that was common to ancient written prophecies, John describes in beautiful graphic vignettes the evil nature of the world, the reward that God promises to those who faithfully endure, and the promise that their faithfulness will be vindicated by His sure judgment of evil.
