Publisher's Summary

To guard his heart or protect two little girls.... Is he willing to risk it all?

1871: Pinkerton detective Chas Bryant's last job for the agency is supposed to be easy - deliver a cache of stolen items back to Mount Vernon after recovering them from profiteers. Soon, however, Chas discovers that nothing in this case is simple. When he’s called upon to search for a little girl gone missing after her parents are murdered, there’s only one woman who can help him . . . but he’ll need to make her his wife in order to complete the investigation.

Jessica Flanders is only trying to rescue her younger sister from a fate bleaker than death. How can the powers that be possibly think that separating them from each other is a good idea? Jessica made a dying promise to her parents. Now she needs Chas’s help to get her sister back, but when they dig deeper into the matter, they discover another little girl with an even greater need for being rescued.

Soon it becomes clear that someone else is searching for the missing girl, too. Can they keep her safe until the case is solved and the murderers are caught? If so, Chas and Jessica will need to forge a bond that is stronger than the evil forces surrounding them, and in the process, a love that will never be lost.

Loved it!

We loved this book! I listen to it with my daughter and my niece and we all three thoroughly enjoyed the story and we were sad when it was over. One of the girls said they should make a movie out of this.

Predictable, but interesting

This installment of the Pinkerton series is a fun and interesting read. The main characters, Charles and Jessica, are on a quest to find out who wanted to murder a horse breeder. The audiobook's narration was good. The case the agents' had to solve was predictable, but interesting.

A great mystery romance !

This is my first audio book by Julia Ridgmont and I can say it will not be my last .
The book starts off at a horse breeders ranch with the owner of the ranch and his ranch hand Mark are waiting for one his horses to have a colt . The colt is born and a man appears and says , you need to start breeding horses to sale because you do not want to lose our clients . The owner says , he has plans with two other horses but he has promised this colt to his daughter Sarah .
The owner tells his ranch hand Mark he needs some shut eye and does he think he can keep an eye out for a little while .
Mark says , yes . Sarah appears in the barn and starts a conversation with Mark . Mark tells her he has to get back to work and all of a sudden they hear horses hoofs and go to see what is going on and to their surprise the y see the house is on fire .
Mark sees something and knows this was not an accident and he has to rescue Sarah so he decides do whatever it takes to get her to Alexandra , Virginia , to the orphanage he lived in . He tells Sarah to change her name to Sasha after looking at the sash on her dress . I will go find help and I will return but I do not know when .
The story turns to a Pinkerton agent from the west coast . He is trying to stop a scam and bring the criminals back to Virginia . While back in the Denver office he is told he needs to marry a female agent . Not to thrilled about it .
He ends up back in Alexandra , Virginia , and he sees a women trying to convince a sheriff not to take her little sister Amy .
The Chaz steps in and pretends he is her fiancee and they plan to marry in a week .
The two marry so they can both help each other save two little girls .
Chaz and Jessica start working together to help the Sarah find justice to who killed her parents .
and to get to get Jessica custody of her little sister Amy .
The book has a lot of twist and turns , suspense , mystery , and hidden secrets .
Keeps the listener on the edge of their seat and there is sweet romance

Great story

I haven’t read many Christian romances and this was the first I’ve listened to. I enjoyed it much more than I expected to. It was a good story about Godly people that brought up Godly concepts as they related to the story without being too preachy.

Loved the narration!

I’ve been reading this series, so this is my first audiobook of this series. I was shocked at first by Archibald’s Scottish accent because I don’t hear it when reading, but it was great and now I hope to listen to many more by this narrator!
The story was wonderful with twists and turns and a very different beginning that pulled me right in! I loved the ending!!
