Out of hiding. Into danger.

Luke Garner is an illegal third child. All his life has been spent in hiding. Now, for the first time, Luke is living among others. He has assumed a deceased boy's identity and is attending Hendricks School for Boys, a windowless building with cruel classmates and oblivious teachers. Luke knows he has to blend in, but he lives in constant fear that his behavior will betray him.

Then one day, Luke discovers a door to the outside. He knows that beyond the walls of Hendricks lie the secrets he is desperate to uncover. What he doesn't know is whom he can trust - and where the answers to his questions may lead him....

I loved it

I like how Luke finally took charge and he knock someone out that was something I’d never expected. And he made his own decisions. What would probably end up to be very important in the future

Just want to keep reading

Though it ends on a good note, if you know there is more to the series, you will just want to put the book up and never down. The story is great and there are a lot of things unexpected about this school. I want to know what will happens next so I will definitely be getting the next one in the series. I highly recommend this book for people that are a bit... antisocial, introverted, anxietis? Just overall people that understand what is like to feel trapped.

Government - 0 Good guys - 2

Really good series so far and I enjoy how much the government sucks. The title should explain it all.

I love this series

the Shadow children series by Margaret Peterson Haddix is one of my absolute favorites having read the series being able to listen to it is a blessing. You become personally attached to Luke. Watching him find himself and become somewhat more educated about what's going on around him. The series is such a great explanation and example a fighting Injustice.

Surprising read

The series ended differently than expected and that’s a nice surprise! This was my favorite series as a young 90s kid in 6th grade.. I wasn’t able to source the rest of the series in later years, after it was written. Grew up pretty poor. What a delight to read-read and finish the entire series for free on Audible!! (A friend recently gifted me the entire set in paperback too!) Now, I’m going and reading all the other Haddix books on Audible! I’m 32 and it’s made my whole month already to finish this series!

Great for all readers

This book is intended for YA but it's a good story with adult narratives. We've all been someplace new and had to be brave and find our way, adapt. The narrator in this book is much better than in the first book too.
