Publisher's summary

In Unity, Maine, Ella Ruth Holt sneaks out of her Amish home to a masquerade gala, hoping to escape her life of never-ending chores for just one night.

As her father's oldest unmarried daughter, most of the responsibility of caring for her younger siblings is now hers ever since her mother passed away. Ella Ruth's new stepmother and stepsisters do little to help, only adding to her workload.

At the masquerade gala, Ella Ruth has an instant connection to James Baldwin, the wealthy heir of a car dealership chain. She feels so drawn to him that she shows him the story she's been writing in her notebook that she carries around, which she doesn't show to anyone. Instantly, James realizes how incredibly talented she is, and falls in love with her that night. However, knowing that their relationship could never go anywhere, Ella Ruth doesn't reveal to James that she's Amish, and she doesn't tell him her name.

When she has to suddenly leave the gala at midnight, she leaves behind her secret Englisher charm bracelet her mother gave her before she died, which holds a web of family secrets and is her most cherished possession.

James searches for Ella Ruth in town, but he's looking in all the wrong places, having no idea that she is in the Amish community. Not only that, but since everyone was wearing a mask, he doesn't know what she looks like.

He hosts a ball at his family's mansion, hoping she will show up. Instead, Ella Ruth's stepsister Amanda shows up at the ball pretending to be Ella Ruth, naming every charm on the bracelet.

Ella Ruth longs to reveal to James that she is the one he is looking for, but if she does, her stepmother will make her and her father pay dearly.

How will Ella Ruth prove to James that she is the one he fell in love with at the masquerade without losing everything and breaking her father's heart?

Nicely written and enjoyable

I enjoyed the book. Well written, enjoyable. I had it read to me by the audible voice version and it was well done.
