Publisher's summary

The North Koreans launch a surprise Nuclear EMP attack on the USA. Our hero, Joe doesn't care about politics or what happened, he just knows his world went to Hell. Planes fell out of the sky, people went nuts looting and killing as he scrambled to hide from all of the craziness.

Joe had a cabin and land in Southern Oregon when TSHTF and retreated to the cabin to survive the massive die-off that was always predicted for an apocalypse. The weeks before the Grid went down weren't much better for Joe because his best friend, his fiancé, and his beloved Grandma all died during the weeks leading up to lights out.

Joe was a young auto mechanic whose only stress in life was from a domineering girlfriend, and now he has to learn how to survive in a post-apocalyptic world without military or survival training.

To make matters worse, others look to him for support and guidance. Listen to American Survivor to find out how a regular guy survives in a post-apocalyptic world.

Great 1st Book to a Series with Great Potential

I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review. This review is for the audio copy of American Survivor, American Apocalypse, Book I: by AJ Newman and narrated by Kevin Pierce. First off, you need to understand that this is my favorite genre for audiobooks and narrated by my favorite narrator. This was an excellent start to what should be a great series. The character development was very good and the storyline is very believable. I think the people behaved and acted very much like what I would expect in a real life situation. This is one of those books where I did not want to stop listening. So every moment I could I had my earbud in and the story turned on. This has the potential to become an awesome series and one of my top ten. As usual the narrator did a superlative job with reading this story. Kevin always makes the story come alive in my mind and I can visualize the story as it unfolds. Keep up the great work and keep them coming.

A realistic dystopian novel

It was really nice to find a book featuring an average person, well supposedly, with a head start from his prepper grandmother and years of experience hunting and trapping it feels like he's quite well prepared.

Joe turned out to go a genuinely likeable guy although I was a bit disappointed that he didn't end up going after the semi-girlfriend that was abducted. He helped so many people during the story, and he really didn't have to, in fact most people wouldn't so this seemed out of character.

The story ends up showing both the best and worst of humanity, including the cliffhanger at the end.

The narration is very well done, the character voices are distinct and recognizable and the overall delivery is a good match for the story.

I received a free copy of this book from the author and/or narrator and/or publisher and I voluntarily wrote this honest review.

Looking forward to Book 2!

Great storyline! The main characters are very like-able. While it is an Apocalyptical story there’s also a great personal story with each character. I purchased this Audible because I love Kevin Pierce as a narrator. But now I am also a big fan of AJ Newman. Can’t wait for Book 2 of the series.

A great apocalyptic thriller

This is the first book I had listened or read by Mr. Newman. He is an excellent storyteller.
The basic story is a plump fellow that works as a mechanic and his world is rocked .

He has had some tragedy in his life and his recently deceased grandmother had written some daily letters to guide him along through life and his inheritance

Life gets worse as things start to go badly with a massive attack on the power grid. Joe finds out about himself and others in this well written story. A great listen if you like good characterization and dystopian fiction. Narration is excellent Mr. Pierce is the best IMO. I look forward to the other books

I was given the book to listen and review. The thoughts are my own and sincere thoughts after listening to the book

It’s ok. For a post apocalyptic intro book

Overall not bad. I’ve read worst post apocalyptic novels. It’s more on realistic side.

But no grit or emotion in the book or characters. Everything kinda fell into pieces flawlessly. Not impressed at all.

Great performance by Kevin Pierce. If it wasn’t for him I don’t think I would be able to finish the book. Not going to get the next book.

wish I could give it more stars

This is a superb modern day apocalypse story with a fantastic narrator. The author does a good job of telling the story of an average guy surviving the end of the world as he knows it. I liked how realistic-seeming things were in the book. I will most definitely look for more from this duo.

Joe and fha story is not ordinary.

I never try to give anything away on a book that I hope is listened to by many. The event that makes this post apocalyptic is not unique, actually plausible seeing where we are today. The lead character is Joe. He is not former special forces nor a survivalist with 20 years prepping for this big one. He is smart but makes mistakes. He does use what he has and is observant. He tries to help others realistically, others he can’t help. No one short of Superman could. This makes it realistic.
The psychology of the people he does help is interesting. One female has no training outside of asking for a drink at the country club but she does everything she can to get help from someone that she wouldn’t have looked twice at before the event. Interesting how humans are survivalist. Some are better at it than others.
The Grandmother- I’ve never seen this way of telling a story. She comes on pretty quick in the book so not giving anything away - that he is often lead by a grandparent that has passed. Not through a vist by a ghost, the author does this very well. Again very believable and effective.
He does find friends and they are in peril more than one time. That’s all I will say in that.
I finished book 1 weeks ago and book two is not out as of May 28, 2018. I do know it will be out soon and will be read by awesome Kevin Pierce.
Thanks to the author for weaving in a few instructions through the book without making it seem like a how to guide.
I’m looking forward to the rest of the series.
I was not paid for or given a free book for my review. I just really liked it.
