Publisher's summary

In modern America, two soldiers will fight their way through the magical legacies of Poe and Hawthorne to destroy an undying evil - if they don't kill each other first.

US Army Captain Dale Morton is a magician soldier - a "craftsman." After a black-ops mission gone wrong, Dale is cursed by a Persian sorcerer and haunted by his good and evil ancestors. Major Michael Endicott, a Puritan craftsman, finds gruesome evidence that the evil Mortons, formerly led by the twins Roderick and Madeline, have returned, and that Dale might be one of them.

Dale uncovers treason in the Pentagon's highest covert ranks. He hunts for his enemies before they can murder him and Scherie, a new friend who knows nothing of his magic.

Endicott pursues Dale, divided between his duty to capture a rogue soldier and his desire to protect Dale from his would-be assassins. They will discover that the demonic horrors that have corrupted American magic are not bound by family or even death itself.

In Tom Doyle's thrilling debut, American Craftsmen, Seal Team Six meets ancient magic - with the fate of the United States hanging in the balance...

A Fantasy Thriller plus History and Magic!

I deeply enjoyed the added depth that Conan McCarty's voices gave to this fabulous novel by Tom Doyle. Doyle's encyclopedic knowledge of history gives amazing detail to this contemporary thriller, and various characters practically jump off the page. The audio was paced perfectly, relaxed without being too slow, and it enhanced the reading experience.

Surprisingly fun

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I was clueless about this book. But five minutes in I was hooked.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Dale Morton was fun to follow in this adventure.

What does Conan McCarty bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

At first I was unsure of the narration but in the end I thought Conan was perfect for this read.

Any additional comments?

I'm normally stick to the Jack Reacher or Scott Horvath types but the whole magic story was compelling and made me want to get more Dale Morton and Michael Endicott.

Marvelous!

If you could sum up American Craftsmen: A Novel in three words, what would they be?

Imaginative, engaging, colorful

Have you listened to any of Conan McCarty’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

No, but he did a terrific job!

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I always listen in pieces.

Any additional comments?

I think A. Silverstone said it more eloquently than I can in his/her review titled "The Double-Edged Sword of Magical Folk," dated April 27, 2014. Read that for the big picture. But that review was for the print or eBook version. I heard the one read by the masterful actor Conan McCarthy. He added another dimension to it with character voicings that made it terrific fun.It took me some time to figure out (Duh) that "Craft" is a less-emotionally-charged substitute for witchcraft. If it helps you to get more out of the story, great. I especially enjoyed how real historical family names going back to there Revolutionary War added another sense of depth to the story. Well done!

Whoa!

Had to give this piece many listens and could give more - a mesh of many genres, eloquence of the English - history major gone sci- to metaphysical - the head splits with the Rambo bent - something for everyone, as there is a bit of carnie rogue spirit as well!

okay supernatural thriller

This is probably a better book than the narrator makes it. The story is decent. There is lots of action and plenty of plot twists. The narration is frankly amateur and detracts from the story. I will keep reading the series, but as text, not as an audio book.
