Publisher's summary

Only Detective Michael Bennett stands in the way of two lethal cartels fighting for New York City's multimillion-dollar opioid trade. And they know where Bennett, and his family, live.

An anonymous tip about a crime in Upper Manhattan proves to be a setup. An officer is taken down - and, despite the attackers' efforts, it's not Michael Bennett.

New York's top cop is not the only one at risk. One of Bennett's children sustains a mysterious injury. A series of murders follows, each with a distinct signature, alerting Bennett to the presence of a professional killer with a flair for disguise.

Bennett taps his best investigators and sources, and they fan out across the five boroughs. But the leads they're chasing turn out to be phantoms. The assassin takes advantage of the chaos, enticing an officer into compromising Bennett, then luring another member of Bennett's family into even graver danger.

Michael Bennett can't tell what's driving the assassin. But he can tell it's personal and that it's part of something huge. Through twist after twist, he fights to understand exactly how he fits into the killer's plan before he becomes the ultimate victim.

Great story; but why twice

It was a great SHORT story, and the narration was superb, but why deceive the reader by selling us a six hour book which is only three hours long.
I wondered at the ‘epilogue’ when there was still three hours to go in the book only to have it start the book all over again.
How sad to be deceived and overpay for a favorite author and one of my favorite series about ‘Michael Bennett’.😢
That’s why I only gave it two out of five stars😠😡🤬

I Think I'm Finished with Michael Bennett

I used to really like detective Michael Bennett. A street-smart cop with a strong devotion to his houseful of adopted children. For Patterson fans, Bennett offered a somewhat refreshing change from our steady Alex Cross diet. However, after James O. Born replaced Michael Ledwidge as co-writer, the stories became less interesting and, simply put, not nearly as well written, too many words to describe simple scenes and situations. Involving Bennett's huge family has become tedious and trite. Worst of all, though, is narrator Danny Mastrogiorgio replacing Bobby Cannavale several episodes ago ... perhaps the worst narrator I've ever tired to endure, monotonous, without feeling, entirely wrong for the Bennett character. I would give him zero points if possible.

awful wordy

I could tell when the author's changed, or what parts were written by which author. the new guy is too descriptive for my taste. I don't need that much detail. I couldn't finish the book, everytime it was smooth sailing it would be interrupted by unnecessary details

Disappointing

Story was wonderful. I found the reader very poor, especially in his attempt at accents. His “expression” was dull.

Disappointed

I love Patterson and Michael Bennett. This story was not very believable and the narration was terrible. The accents all sounded the same. Words were mispronounced. I looked forward to this book coming out and sorry to say I am disappointed.

narration

The narrator on this book makes the Irish priest sound like an Indian-If you can't do the accent-don't try-it ruins the whole book.-The other books in this series are great-I could not get through this one-thanks to the narration-AWFUL

5 stars for the story-I actually borrowed the book from a friend

Hispanic accent needs some work

Great story but narration was annoying when he speaks in his creative Hispanic accent. I found myself distracted when the characters were Irish Spanish.

Narration kills it

The story lines of the last few Michael Bennett books are good, but any chance of them being enjoyable is killed by Danny Mastrogiorgio narrating. This one is the worst so far. I feel like I'm listening to a high school kid robotically read a play out loud in front of his English class. It's painful. Bring back Bobby Cannavale...pay him whatever he wants. Please.

Good story, not a fan of the performance

I really enjoyed the story, but the reader sounded like he was reading. He often used the wrong voice inflection, as if he was asking a question, when he wasn't. I would have preferred a straight reading, rather than a bad performance. It distracted from the story.
