Well developed characters

I thought the ending could've been expanded a bit more but overall it was a really good story

Real, flawed people.

This novel was recommended to me by my wife, who just finished it the week before I plowed through it. I found these characters to be frustratingly realistic, flawed but still plausible—which is the sweet spot for characterization. I think the hallmark of strong character writing is generating characters that people can simultaneously relate to via the author hijacking the reader’s memories of people in their own orbit, and the author was successful here. This is perhaps, like certain songs or bands, a book best experienced if you’ve ever been spurned or had your heart broken. The narration is high quality, I enjoyed the French accents; though I am not an expert on dialect, I considered the narrator’s attempt to be fine, I’ll add that Laure and Erica are perhaps two sides of a neurodivergent coin, with Laure striking me as a bit autistic and Erica striking me as inattentive ADHD (or perhaps another type mixed). But that’s just my two cents. As an AuDHD reader, this felt like seeing a relationship between two parts of my brain play out. The hidden expectations, the forgetting about the other very important person until they come up in association with something else. The selfishness and the selflessness. And even if I’m way off base with the neurodivergent stuff, you can rest assured knowing the story you’re telling adding is genuinely human, and it feels good to feel along with these characters—even if it’s a bit of heartbreak at times.

The women in this story are so real to me! I miss them already. Get ready for some sad turns but truly love their love story.

So hard to put down

This book hooked me in from the first chapter. Rhe reader follows Erika and Lore through the nearly 40 year ups and downs of a relationship both romantic and other wise. Such a great example of how people and situations change as we grow in life.

Almost Life broke me a little

It is so painfully beautiful, the way it captures how some of us become tourists in our own lives, watching from the window instead of stepping fully into the room. To all our gardens we need to enter and see for real out there.
