Story
People with borderline or narcissistic personality disorders have a serious mental illness that primarily affects their intimate, personal, and family relationships. Often they appear to be normally functioning at work and in public interactions, and narcissists may even be highly effective, in the short term, in some work or social situations. However, in intimate relationships, they can be emotional, aggressive, demeaning, illogical, paranoid, accusing, and controlling - in the extreme.

Publisher's Summary
Do you have a child who ignores you when you give directions, or argues with you like an attorney trying to change your mind, or refuses to talk to you other than with a few words or grunts? Do you sometimes feel that you and your children are more like adversaries than allies? If you do, then Ally Parenting: A Non-Adversarial Approach to Transform Conflict into Cooperation is for you. Each of these challenges creates a painful wall between you and your child that can melt away with an Ally Parenting approach.
This Ally Parenting audiobook is the synthesis of 22 years of teaching parents through private parenting consultations, classes, and speaking engagements. Each chapter is an answer to questions parents have asked about how to get more cooperation from their children, or how to make them more responsible, or how to get their child to talk to them more. Parents who had tried many common strategies such as taking things away, isolating, yelling, pleading, threatening, shaming, questioning, and commanding, couldn't stand it anymore.
These common authoritarian strategies create an adversarial relationship in the family. Therefore, parents are unable to influence their children and often feel like powerless victims. They want their children to view them as an ally who will listen to them and discuss problems with them. At the same time, they want to be respected as the final authority in the family. The parents in this audiobook weren't ready to give up on their families, so they reached out to me to find an alternate parenting approach that would work with their children.
As parents and I worked together, it became clear that they needed to know exactly what to say. Since they didn't experience respectful parenting as a child, they didn't have a reservoir of words to use. They needed to know what current words and actions were building the walls so they could stop using them. Parents also needed to know not only what to say, but how to listen so they could emotionally connect with their children. As a result, Ally Parenting was born.

Effective roadmap to address parenting challenges
Ally Parenting: A Non-Adversarial Approach to Transform Conflict Into Cooperation is the clearest roadmap you'll find to solving your parenting challenges. The author, Cynthia Klein, is highly skilled at breaking down complex concepts and complicated parent-child interactions and providing easy-to-understand strategies and solutions. She gives you just enough background and theory to understand the “why” behind her recommendations while empowering you to implement changes quickly and making sure not to overwhelm you. One of my favorite aspects of the book is the variety of real-life examples Cynthia offers from her own life and the lives of her many clients, Through these examples, Cynthia explains her concepts and provides specific language for parents to use with their kids. As a family therapist, I highly recommend this book for parents and caregivers of children ages 5 to 25. I know I'll be using Cynthia’s approach often in my work with families.

Excellent Audio Book!
I loved Cynthia Klein's 'Ally Parenting' audiobook! She included so many different scenarios about how to handle parent/child conflicts, to get children/teens to cooperate, and to improve family life. I was able to hear not only the recommended words to use, but also recommended intonation (which coneys 65-90% of our message when we communicate). With the audiobook, I was able to listen while getting ready for the day, while commuting, and while getting ready for bed. It was such an interesting audiobook that I looked forward to returning to it, when I had time to myself.
As a psychotherapist, I highly recommend this book to parents who are struggling to get their children/teens to cooperate and want to improve relationships with their kids, so they can enjoy their time together.

Wow!
As parents, we have a lot resting on our shoulders and we don't like being told that what we are doing or how we are doing something is wrong. However, Cynthia J Klein tells us just that with a firm but gentle way. She doesn't use this book to "rub our noses" in our misdealings with our children instead she takes us by the hand and leads us down the more responsive and cohesive road. It's not easy to analyse ourselves yet that is what has to happen in order for a change to occur. If you are looking for a way to help you with having a better relationship with your child(ren) then this book is what you need. There's a lot of information Ms Klein shares and it will take multiple listenings to fully grasp her message and techniques but if you are serious about changing then it will be worth it. The pdf that goes with book is very helpful as well and I would like to thank Ms Klein for including it. I personally found this book to be very enlightening and plan to use her suggestions...one baby step at a time, my children are worth it. The narration is well done. Jennifer Jill Araya reads at a nice pace and does do different voices for the examples given. She has a very nice and calm voice to listen to and helps to sooth any ragged nerves you may get from listening (and you will have some ragged nerves at various points because no one likes to be criticized, even constructively). Overall, I highly recommend this book for any wanting to find a better way to communicate and teach their children.
I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.
