Hugh returns from Mars, his mission a success. He returns with not only Gideon but a man named Hinata who had also been on display. While trying to speak with the Governor of Mars, Hugh ends up cutting off the man’s ear. When they are back in Alaska, Hinata points out that if that happened to him, he would seek immediate revenge. And now that Hugh is in back home in Anchorage, that revenge would also be doled out on the Amish. Unsure where to go, Hinata suggests returning to his village in Japan- far away from Anchorage where they can deal with whoever is coming on their own terms.

Arriving in Japan, Hugh hides the ship in a cave above Hinata’s wrecked village. While in the cave, he encounters a group of locals who believe that since Hugh is in a space ship, he is also a gatherer and must die. Except these men are not what they appear to be. After a tense exchange (and Hinata’s fame), they decide to help Hugh in his fight against the arriving Martians. The Martians expect to find two primitives but end up facing a Vampire, a Senshi, and three Werewolf Samurai.

On their way back to Anchorage, Hugh is stopped by a Venusian Corvette. Forced to go to the Venusian colony of Ayers Landing, in Australia, Hugh meets a security officer who seems to have learned a great deal about Hugh. And Hugh learns a great deal about the Venusian’s attitude toward Martians; it is very similar to Hugh’s attitude.

An unlikely alliance is formed between Hugh, the Werewolves, and Ayers Landing.
