Publisher's Summary

A glamorous cruise on a luxurious ocean liner turns deadly in the latest mystery from "Queen of Suspense" and number-one New York Times best-selling author Mary Higgins Clark.

Fleeing a disastrous and humiliating arrest of her husband-to-be on the eve of their wedding, Celia Kilbride, a gems and jewelry expert, hopes to escape from public attention by lecturing on a brand-new cruise ship - the Queen Charlotte.

Onboard she meets 86-year-old Lady Emily Haywood - "Lady Em", as she is known throughout the world. Immensely wealthy, Lady Em is the owner of a priceless emerald necklace that she intends to leave to the Smithsonian after the cruise.

Three days out to sea, Lady Em is found dead - and the necklace is missing. Is it the work of her apparently devoted assistant, Brenda Martin, or her lawyer-executor, Roger Pearson, and his wife, Yvonne, both of whom she had invited to join them on the cruise? Or is it Professor Henry Longworth, an acclaimed Shakespeare scholar who is lecturing onboard? Or Alan Davidson, a guest on the ship who is planning to spread his wife's ashes at sea? The list of suspects is large and growing. Celia, with the help of her new friends Willy and Alvirah Meehan, who are celebrating their 45th wedding anniversary, sets out to find the killer, not realizing that she has put herself in mortal danger before the ship reaches its final destination.

Never, in all her long career as a number-one best-selling suspense novelist, has Mary Higgins Clark been in better form.

Disappointing...

I had high expectations for this book because the story seemed fun and exciting, a who-done-it at sea. Needless to say, there was very little suspense, character development or surprises in this story. I didn’t even like the main character. She wasn’t gutsy or spunky or anything, and you really didn’t get to know her. Everything wrapped up too easily in the end and there was a plot point that was left hanging. Not worth the money spent on it.

Good but not great

I love Mary Higgins Clark and have read/listened to all her books. This one was a little off. The Story was great, the narration too. It was a bit repetitive though. I kept hearing the same phrases and thought I had somehow skipped backed in listening. It was enjoyable for sure. It kept you wondering til close to the end, like her novels do. Just know about the repetition and you won't be surprised when you hear the same phrase more than once. I would still recommend it.

Another Winner

I love the Alvira and Willie books that Mary Higgins Clark writes and Jan Maxwell's performances are superb.

An Elvira & Willie mystery on a cruise ship. Quite enjoyable. Characters well drawn. Ambiance delightful. Narrator gifted. Worthy of a credit.

Very hard to listen to

I love this author, this book was terrible. I listen to 2-3 books a week and I gave this book a full listen and absolutely did not enjoy it. There was nothing I found enjoyable about it. Mary Higgins Clark has a lot of amazing titles- this not one of them.

As always Mary Higgins Clark never disappoints

Nice story easy to listen
Love all her stories one of my favorite authors
As I continue to go back and listen to her older novels it is nice to listen to a good story without obscenities, graphic violence

This is one of my favorite authors, but . . . .

this novel, unfortunately, didn't live up to my expectations. The narrator's monotone voice didn't help either. Sorry!

I haven’t read (or listened to) a Mary Higgins Clark book that I haven’t enjoyed and this was no exception! Brilliant storyline and Jan Maxwell has a lovely voice

Easy read.

Love the settings of a luxury modern Titanic. The story itself is old fashioned and straight forward.

Not vintage Clark

Would you listen to All by Myself, Alone again? Why?

Probably not as it was not the most engaging of Mary Higgins Clark stories. The characters were underdeveloped and flat.

What did you like best about this story?

I guess the only reason I read the story was because Mary Higgins Clark wrote it and as she is nearing 90 I hate to think that she may stop writing soon.

What three words best describe Jan Maxwell’s performance?

Predictable. Maxwell reads all of Clark's works and there is little deviation in her style and performance.Flat. The characters were flat and therefore it must have been hard to try and imbue them with some life.Boring. Same reason as before.

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

Death at Sea.

Another Mary Higgins Clark masterpiece.

The plot of this book is classic Mary Higgins Clark.
The narrator, Jan Maxwell was very entertaining, particularly in capturing the voice of the main characters.
I can't wait for the next Alvirah Meehan mystery!
