Publisher's Summary

The second volume of memoirs from the author who inspired the BBC series All Creatures Great and Small.

Now settled into the sleepy Yorkshire village of Darrowby and married to Helen the farmer's daughter, James Herriot thinks he's finally got himself sorted. But life as a vet in the 1930s was never going to be easy. Quite aside from his unpredictable colleagues, brothers Siegfried and Tristan Farnon, he must contend with new-fangled medical techniques, delivering calves after far too much homemade wine, and a grudge-holding dog called Magnus who never forgets. And then, with Britain on the verge of war, James faces a decision that could separate him from Darrowby - and Helen - forever....

Since they were first published, James Herriot's memoirs have sold millions of copies and entranced generations of animal lovers. Charming, funny and touching, All Things Bright and Beautiful is a heartwarming story of determination, love and companionship from one of Britain's best-loved authors.

Brilliantly written

This book was wonderful and would have been better if only the editor kept the music out of it, I did not feel it added and often it diminished from the book.
On more than one occasion the music was between sentences in the same paragraph or even words in the same sentence, each musical piece was about 30 seconds long and often overlapped the end of the sentence and the beginning of the next.
In general I think the editor and narrator did a poor job of it and would not recommend their works to anyone, James Herriot is still a great author and should be read/listened to.

Christopher Timothy is excellent as usual

And there are no glitches in this version as well. Several sad points in the story. Change can be sad

at last

This was the only omnibus audio book missing from the herriot collection on audible. It is superb and a must for any fan. You also get to meet Granville Bennett for the first time. Very enjoyable

Good book spoiled by music

Love these books, but miss the familiar music, and the edits were somewhat clunky and the music chosen disappointing.

Marvellous!

Took me back to my teens when I first learned about James Herriot. Loved the books then and still love them today. You can tell from the narration that Christopher Timothy loves them too. Brilliantly written book brilliantly narrated. What more do you want? Buy it!

Bad recording of great stories

This is a very poor recording. I dont know if this is unique to my download but it stutters, splutters and has echo at times all the way through. Some of the recording narration I just can't hear. I know these stories off by heart from reading the books so many times, I know what should be coming and when and this is an insult to the wonderful stories of James Herriott. These book stories are truly marvellous, this recording of them is not. There is also unnecessary incidental music which sometimes drowns narration completely and none of the music adds anything. Someone needs to look into this and put this dire recording right. I want to give a better review because it's not the book stories or even narration that is the issue it's my copy recording but I have to rate it on what I have received. Therefore its 5 stars for the stories, 4 stars for the narration but 0 stars for this awful recording.

‘perfect stories, gifted story-telling

As a child I’d read & watched & really loved all things JamesHerriot. Now Im grownup, Im enjoying these tales every bit as much; gorgeous gentle humour.
No-one but Christopher Timothy should be allowed any place near the narration - he *is* Herriot, superb!
A beautiful book for all ages.

PS- somebody (prev review ^) on here moans about ‘music’ spoiling the reading..? For heaven’s sake - theres a couple of bars of cheery tunes here & there; no impact, no issue.

Great book ~ narration terrific ~ but...

Why the occasional musical interludes?? Intrusive to the narrative....the story stands alone without embellishment!

Absolutely delightful

A delight to listen to especially as the narrator is the same person who played James Herriot in the BBC television series.
