Publisher's summary

"A standout among the many novels set in this world-changing era." (Kirkus Review, A Starred Review)

Welcome to Vienna 1934, where the future holds such promise for Emma and her friends. In the tumultuous time that follows, their world is torn apart by the rise of Nazism, six years of war, and their aftermath.

The novel offers different perspectives as the listener follows Emma as she struggles to find a way to come to terms with grief and her country's betrayal; and as Sophie returns from her American refuge in search of her lost history, while her uncle Friedrich wrestles with secrets that will throw all their lives into turmoil again. This story of loss and resilience is alive with lessons for today.

"Novelist Wittig has a gift for character development and for pacing. She takes her time, raising this story to the deserved level of saga." (Kirkus Review)

Keep reading it gets better

This book was nothing I expected it to be. It started out really fast and hard to keep up with zooming through WWII and the next thing you know we are in 1955, which is where the story starts to get good. The story lines were difficult to follow at first but after awhile you started to figure out who’s who.
The ending was the best and even that is a little off the beaten path.
Not sure I would recommend this book to someone to purchase but if given or lent then worth the read.
