Publisher's Summary

The inspiration for the BBC series of the same name.

Fresh out of Glasgow Veterinary College, to the young James Herriot 1930s Yorkshire seems to offer an idyllic pocket of rural life in a rapidly changing world. But from his erratic new colleagues, brothers Siegfried and Tristan Farnon, to incomprehensible farmers, herds of semiferal cattle, a pig called Nugent and an overweight Pekingese called Tricki Woo, James find he is on a learning curve as steep as the hills around him. And when he meets Helen, the beautiful daughter of a local farmer, all the training and experience in the world can't help him....

Since they were first published, James Herriot's memoirs have sold millions of copies and entranced generations of animal lovers. Charming, funny and touching, All Creatures Great and Small is a heartwarming story of determination, love and companionship from one of Britain's best-loved authors.

Critic Reviews

"I grew up reading James Herriot's books and I'm delighted that 30 years on, they are still every bit as charming, heartwarming and laugh-out-loud funny as they were then." (Kate Humble)

A radiator of warmth and kindess

I read this as a lonely lad sent away to boarding school in the 1980's, James Herriot was a terrific companion.
Rereading this in the world of 2018 it was even better than I remembered it.
Great characters; human and animal, difficult cases, detective work, suspense, romance, comedy, booze and buckets of charm, this wonderful book has it all. Highly recommended.

Enthralling

What a lovely book and so well read! It made me laugh out loud in public at times and had just enough details about veterinary science of the time to be interesting and not so much as to take away from the story. Characters have great depth of description. A book that really deserves a cup of tea and a comfy chair.

As good as I remembered it to be

I read these years ago and this reading certainly was up to my expectations. No complaints about the narration, and some of the stories had me in stitches. I cant wait to start the second volume

Delightful!

James Herriot’s wonderful writing is paired perfectly with the talented, versatile and playful narration of Christopher Timothy in this audio book. I enjoyed every moment and felt sad when it ended.

Great story and narrator - terrible sound quality

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

I love this book - it's evocative of life in the Dales and of times long lost. Herriot delivers a rich sensory painting with beautiful descriptions. If you're squeamish, it might not be something to listen to over a cheese and pickle sandwich at lunchtime.

What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?

Christopher Timothy's narration is superb, and the audiobook is segmented by short bursts of instrumental music to punctuate the story. However, I tried both streaming and playing from my mobile download and there were gaps in sentences, when the narration cut out, and there were frequent jarring moments where the recording 'stuck' like a record on a turntable before continuing. Given the quality of the story, and the performance, this was highly disappointing.

Classic, perfect narrator - terrible editing

I have read the books and watched the films and TV series over and over, so was delighted to see Christopher Timothy as the narrator chosen for the Audible book.

The stories were wonderful as ever, the narrator perfect, bringing them to life in the voice of 'James' from the TV series - the editing was not.

Oddly timed interjections of music jarred rather than helped the mood, and the recording frequently stalled, jerked, stuttered, and therefore missed out chunks of the narrative. I felt this was not just annoying, but surely insulting to Mr Timothy who had worked so hard to give a super performance, each character brought beautifully to life.

I was so disappointed with this one - bad editing ruined what could have been a five-star audiobook.

Wonderful story but poor recording!!

This is a gorgeous story full of life and love and read brilliantly! The experience was let down by the dodgy recording. So frustrating!! It jarred and repeated a few times and is really bad at the end. Please sort it out Audible. This is a classic, beloved by many and deserves some TLC.

All Creatures Great and Small

A much loved series. I read the books and watched the tv series many many years ago. The audio book is also enchanting to listen too. Unfortunately there are quite a few breaks and scratches in the recording. Can this be repaired?

I love all of James Herriot's books and to hear them read by Christopher Timothy is just perfect. Was genuinely sad when I got to the end of this, you just want it to go on endlessly.

Enchanting

Humorous, warm and sometimes bitter-sweet. This book is a wonderful reminder of the value of simple things, community and kindness. Eccentric characters (human and animal) are encountered by the tolerant young vet in his first few years of practice. I read this book with my mother when I was perhaps ten years old and it has been lovely to listen again.

A wonderful cosy read

A wonderful cosy read. There's no plot here, just a series of well written and entertaining musings on the life of a country vet in the 1930s. As such, it's one that is easy to pick up and put down as needed. I finished book one and immediately turned to book two. The audio narrator - Christopher Timothy - does a terrific job of bringing the stories to life.

Country vet comforts

Christopher Timothy is the ideal narrator of this series having himself starred as James Herriot in the BBC/One ‘70s television series. His warmly animated rendition gently winds us through stories of the familiar and much loved Yorkshire Dales. Timothy’s reading expertly reveals the quirky characters and wonderful highs and lows of Herriot’s veterinary adventures.

A little confused, but happy anyway

Why confused? Before downloading any James Herriot Audiobooks, I did an online search to try and find out what order his books were released, so that I would follow his stories from start to end. So, I went ahead and purchased what, according to my, search were the first two; "If Only They Could Talk" & "It Shouldn't Happen to a Vet" & listened to them with great amusement. What I didn't realise when I purchased "All Creatures Great and Small", was that it was repeating the first two books and 'more'. What that 'more' is, I will will maybe find out when I listen to the next two Audiobooks in the 'series'.

Though in listening to stories I'd previously heard & maybe spoilers of Audiobooks next in line, I've thoroughly enjoyed listening to these wonderful tales of bygone years again. If you like factual life stories of times past, littered with humour, like me, you'll likely get great enjoyment from this Audiobook.
