Publisher's summary

A classic of Holocaust literature, Gerda Weissmann Klein's memoir tells the moving story of a young woman's experience as a slave laborer for the Nazis and her miraculous liberation. Gerda was 18 years old when she was taken from her home in Poland and imprisoned for 3 years in a series of German work camps. Meanwhile, her parents died in the ovens of Auschwitz and her brother perished in the interior of Poland. Gerda now lives in Arizona with her husband, Kurt Klein, who helped liberate Gerda from Volary, Czechoslovakia, on May 7, 1945. This moving memoir was the inspiration for the Academy Award-winning documentary One Survivor Remembers.

Life changing

I stumbled upon this book title by accident- funny enough on TikTok. Once I started, I could not stop. This was an amazing story of determination, and grit. Thank you to Gerda for helping tell the stories of these girls and people. They will never be forgotten. I have so much love for this book.

One of the best. Holocaust books

Such tragedy at a young age. What inner strength Greta had such kindness to others Highly recommend. She spared us a lot of horrible details which other book will give.

Wonderful story, beautifully read

The only reason for getting this book was because Barbara Rosenblat was the Narrator. I extremely enjoyed The Nazis officers wife which Rosenblat had also narrated. They way she brings these characters to life makes me feels as though I am right there witnessing what was happening. I can't wait to find my next book that she has done.

Very good

It was an amazing story. I am always curious as to what motivates people to survive. What differentiates the leaders from the followers. Gerda makes you feel what was driving her. Such a small person physically can be so large.

Thank you

I thank the author for sharing her story with me. It is very important for us all to know history, the good and the very bad, so that it may never be repeated. To have a glimpse in the window of such a tragic time in history is an honor. I wholeheartedly recommend this book, so that we may all express compassion, empathy, love, understanding, and appreciation for all fellow human beings.

A must read

One of the best, most heartbreaking written stories from the Holocaust, on such a personal level. Cried so many times for the faith in humanity that was lost and the tortures endured by so many beautiful people. Gerda truly amazes me; her strength, intuition, and determination in the face of adversary is remarkable. Read/listen to this book no matter what you do!
