I highly recommend

I had to force myself to pause and go to bed. Only because I had to work next day and my job requires me to fully awake and alert. This book will not disappointment. Can’t wait to read the rest of the series.

this was a really corny story. it was ok but really nothing to write home about

Swimming in the shallow end of the kiddie pool

Even with my love of campy alien romance, this was too cutesy and immature for me. This combines alien abduction with a Hunger Games theme, where alien Tetrix and human Ana are put into a planet-sized arena and need to capture a flag to with their freedom. They can get gifts from sponsors and there’s a drone that records their progress. But, except for the very beginning and end, it’s just the two of them in the wild for the whole story. There are no other contestants and no bad guy (unless you count the faceless Council that run the games). All of this meant the games weren’t very exciting. The danger felt very Scooby-Doo cartoonish.

I get that the game is just the vehicle to get to the romance, but unfortunately the romance was even more juvenile. Tetrix is essentially a giant kid, raised in captivity and has never had a woman. But, he conveniently has sentient hair that functions like sex toys and his lips alone can bestow the “Fiery Kiss of Bliss” (essentially an O from kissing). 🙄 And, he is the bestest lover because one of his fellow captives told him how to please a woman. 🙄🙄 He spends too much time wallowing in “who could love a beast” insecurity or obsessing about how he’s going to honor and cherish his insta-mate. It all felt like a high schooler’s idea of romantic wish fulfillment.

Ana is slightly more adult, although she does a “Na na Na na Na Na” victory dance when they win the game (and I mean she literally says “Na na Na na Na Na” while looking into the camera). 🙄🙄🙄 I just couldn’t get into these kids getting it on in the middle of a life and death struggle. Maybe that’s why the naughty bits (two scenes not counting the occasional Fiery Kiss of Bliss) did absolutely nothing for me.

For reference, for campy, sexy alien gladiator romance, I preferred Anna Hackett’s Galactic Gladiators (first three books available in a collection) or Ruby Dixon’s Bad Guy (happens post-gladiator life).
