Publisher's summary

Alcohol Explained is the definitive, ground-breaking guide to alcohol and alcoholism. It explains how alcohol affects human beings on a chemical, physiological, and psychological level, from those first drinks right up to chronic alcoholism. Alcoholism and problem drinking seems illogical to those on the outside; indeed, it is equally perplexing for the alcoholic or problem drinker. This audiobook provides a logical, easy-to-follow explanation of the phenomenon and detailed instructions on how to beat it. Despite being entirely scientific and factual in nature, the audiobook is presented in an accessible and easily understandable format.

"This is an excellent book written by an inquisitive and educated author who during a period of his life suffered from alcoholism. The book explains in an easily understood language the various effects that alcohol has on our body. In my opinion the text would serve as a great handbook not only for those struggling with alcohol but also medical students as part of their education. I am sure some of my own patients troubled with alcoholism in recent years could have benefited from reading William’s book and I will be recommending it going forward." - Håvard Molvik, MD, MRCS, MSc, MRCGP

An appropriate title

AE is a great book on the effects of alcohol and how those effects influence the human body and social spectrum. More importantly, William shines a light on how little we know about those effects, and how that ignorance has lead to a society where many people defend their ignorance in the name of fun.

I especially enjoyed the chapter on how the brain reacts to alcohol, after it's become used to it. Like the ability to remember the street you grew up on as a child, your brain carves similar pathways when it comes to alcohol. Only instead of the pathways being beneficial--knowing your way home--they become detrimental. If you're reading this and have become the type of person where the idea of drinking only 1 or 2 drinks for the night is unacceptable, this book will explain why. And in a way that's palatable.

If you've been a binge drinker or heavy drinker for years, and you want to stop, but don't like the woo woo mysticism of AA, this book can be a cannon in your arsenal. It explains well the effects of quitting drinking, and why even having one drink can lead to full blown relapse; often worse than before.

it helped me understand a lot better!

I read this book to get a better understanding of what my boyfriend, who is an alcoholic is going through. I thought I knew it all already, but I had a lot of aha moments reading this book. I wish the author dove into the depression side of alcoholism a little bit more and not just saying "to just seek the advice from a Dr," like every4one else does.

A huge huge help!

Thank you so much for writing this book. I am a practical realistic person and this provided the fact based answers that i was looking for. I didnt need to hear about fluffy higher powersurrendering i needed to know what is happening to me physically, and phychologicly. This is all powerful advice, and i entend to re-listen to this every time i am beginning to feel the need to drink.
My only constructive criticism is to use the word “however” less.
Thanks for the help!

Long Overdue!!! Hits home

This is so informative and love the length of the chapters. I love how the author shares & relates own life events to the subject in the chapter. It made me look at my past, present & future relationship with alcohol.

Highly recommend for the drinker or anyone who has a relationship with alcohol or a relationship with an individual with anyone who is a drinker. EXCELLENT !!!!!

Eye Opening Must Listen for All

I loved this book! I just finished it and am going right into a second listen so that I can be sure to soak it all up. I found this book informational on both a scientific and antidotal level. If you are questioning your drinking habits this will shed some light. Thanks to the author for this great piece of work.

Finally broke the spell of my 1/2+ a bottle of liquor a day problem

Simple and to the point, it has changed my life over the last month. I would recommend to anyone even considering learning more about what alcohol does to the mind and body.

The best help ever.

I have been a problem drinker for many years. After a long time and many attempts at stopping my alcohol use, I finally have stopped. After counseling and being caught up in the maze of “help” books and websites and spending hundreds of dollars trying quit drinking, I finally came to understand the mechanics of my addiction.
To anyone who is struggling or feels like a failure, I highly recommend this book.
Thank you William Porter. You are a life saver.
