Giuseppe Verdi (1813-1901) prägte die italienische Musikwelt wie kein zweiter. Trotz seines Talents wurde er am Mailänder Konservatorium nicht aufgenommen. Privat und beruflich vom Unglück verfolgt, gab er die Musik zunächst auf, bis ihn der Direktor der Mailänder Scala aus seiner Verzweiflung riss und zum erneuten Komponieren motivierte. Daraufhin entstanden fast 30 weltbekannte Opern. "Aida" wurde 1871 im Opernhaus von Kairo uraufgeführt.
