Editorial reviews

A murdered newborn is found in a convent, the product of a resident nun who denies both the baby and any sexual experience. Part mystery, part theology, part psychology, the play shifts from the mother to the protective mother superior to a lapsed Catholic psychiatrist with troubles of her own. This L.A. Theatre Works production succeeds on many levels as the three women strive to understand what happened and why, and the resulting impact on their lives. All three principals perform their difficult roles with great skill: They scream, they shout, they interrupt, they whisper and whimper, yet remain totally in command of their audioplay. A Broadway and film sensation, the play is equally good on audio.

Publisher's summary

In this contemporary murder mystery, set within the confines of a convent, Agnes is a devout, innocent young nun accused of infanticide. As a psychiatrist - herself a lapsed Catholic - and the Mother Superior struggle over Agnes' fate, the play plunges deeply into the mystery of faith and the consequence of truth.

A fascinating play brought sharply to life

This audiobook reminds me greatly of Equus, a startling and astounding play. This is a complex play where faith, science and belief come into conflict over a tragedy that takes place in a convent. Just what happened with Agnes, a young novice in the order? Where was God in it all? Was it divine or was it madness? Can her court appointed psychiatrist help uncover the truth? What will happen if she does?

The play has been perfectly produced and each character performed with competence and the depth required. They are so much more than stereotypes, but fully formed human beings.

No matter what your view on religion, this play will engage and entertain, perhaps confront you, and ask you to think about your own beliefs - and that's where it become a great piece of performance art.

I FELT THERE WERE TOO MANY UNANSWERED QUESTIONS

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

MAYBE. IT WAS A PLAY. IT DID NOT TAKE TOO LONG TO HEAR, BUT NOT FOR EVERYONE.

Would you be willing to try another book from John Pielmeier? Why or why not?

I DON'T KNOW. I WOULD HAVE TO SEE WHAT IT WAS ABOUT. I WOULD NOT WANT A BOOK WITH SO MANY UNANSWERED QUESTIONS.

What about the narrators’s performance did you like?

THE SPEAKING WAS CLEAR BUT I DID NOT LIKE THE VOICE OF THE NARATOR.

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

I DID SEE THE MOVIE. AND IT LEFT JUST AS MANY UNANSWERED QUESTIONS.

Any additional comments?

THO IT WAS NOT A TOP READ I AM NOT SORRY I BOUGHT THE BOOK. I DID WANT TO KNOW IF THERE WAS UNANSWERED QUESTIONS IN THE MOVIE THAT THE STORY WOULD GIVE ME. IT DID NOT. BUT I WANTED TO KNOW JUST IN CASE. IF YOU HAVE SEEN THE MOVIE, IT TELLS YOU ALL THE PLAY WILL TELL YOU AND NO MORE.
