Not at all what I was expecting...................

Although this book had some elements of a mystery, it was even more a combination of family drama and Southern Gothic. Aftermath is told from the point of view of Janet Wright, a middle-aged woman who leaves behind her life in New York City to journey to a small town in Georgia where she was born and spent the first few year of her life. Janet's father has been murdered, and she has inherited all of his holdings and wealth after being estranged from him since she was a toddler. The author uses foreshadowing to keep hinting about something suspicious behind both her father's lifestyle and his death, and Janet begins to interrogate her new neighbors to try to find out what evil they are concealing.

Because the book is told from the first person point of view of Janet, I felt that I really knew her by the end of the book. Although I overall liked her, her personality could be pretty overwhelming. She was constantly alienating people with whom she was trying to make friends, and she made outlandish accusations without any seeming basis in reality. That said, I had to admire her determination and gumption to get to the bottom of things, even if that stubbornness was rarely her friend. The story has many interesting secondary characters, and I loved how the author draws out the suspense to the very end.

I chose to listen to this book because I have enjoyed Amy Deuchler's narration is previous audiobooks, and her performance in Aftermath does not disappoint. She has a very smooth voice with a slight nasally tone that I find very entertaining, and I highly recommend anything that she narrates and this audiobook in particular.

I received a copy of this audiobook at my request in exchange for this honest review.

Aftermath

An exciting mystery. When it involves an entire town, and nobody is talking, things can get a bit suspenseful. Can Janet uncover what is going on before it’s too late?

George Weinstein kept me guessing as the storyline unfolded. Well done!

I am a fan of Amy Deuchler’s work. Her narrations are always well done, and this is no exception.

Small Towns

Aftermath written by George Weinstein and narrated by Amy Deuchler tells the story of Janet Wright from New York City, who goes back to her town of birth after her estranged, rich father is murdered. The town was basically owned by her father and now Janet. Janet stays on trying to figure out the mystery to her father’s murder. I enjoyed all the characters and every time I thought I had it figured out, something happened to change my theory. I loved this book and looked forward to each day’s commute to work, so as to listen to Amy Deuchler’s excellent narration. The characters were easily distinguishable. Enjoyable 'Cozy' Mystery

Aftermath is a fairly enjoyable 'Cozy' Mystery. The setting of the small town southern town of Graylee as well as the residents is interesting. The juxtaposition of a Big City New Yorker Janet Wright returning to her small town southern roots is played up quite a bit. Janet returns to Graylee after her very rich Father who she hasn't seen since she was 5 was murdered and left everything to her. She pretty much owns Graylee and everything in it. As soon as she gets there she realizes that people don't particularly seem to like her or have liked her father much either even though they were completely reliant on him. She begins to suspect that something is going on and that her fathers murder by a drifter isn't as clear an open and shut case as it has been out to be and she begins investigating herself putting her in the middle of this towns mystery.

The story is pretty good, the narration is also done very well, my main issue is with some of the main characters choices and decisions seem a bit much to me but it doesn't really hurt the story or mystery aspect of it. It is a fun mystery and an easy and enjoyable read.

Cozy Suspense Read

A small town. A big secret.

After the death of her father, Janet doesn’t know what she’s walking into. All she knows is the way that the townspeople look at her. As she begins to slowly learn the town’s awful secret she finds herself in the middle of a dangerous web of lies, the same one that led to her father’s death.

This audiobook was enrapturing from the beginning. I loved the way the author created so drastically different personalities for all the characters. The MC was both funny and determined, a real delight in this little mystery/suspense audiobook.

The narration was perfect for the story.
