Publisher's summary

Soon to be a major motion picture from Imagine Entertainment and producers Ron Howard and Brian Grazer.

Between life and death lies an epic war, a relentless manhunt through two worlds...and an unforgettable love story.

The last thing FBI agent Will Brody remembers is the explosion - a thousand shards of glass surfing a lethal shock wave.

He wakes without a scratch.

The building is in ruins. His team is gone. Outside, Chicago is dark. Cars lie abandoned. No planes cross the sky. He's relieved to spot other people - until he sees they're carrying machetes.

Welcome to the afterlife.

Claire McCoy stands over the body of Will Brody. As head of an FBI task force, she hasn't had a decent night's sleep in weeks. A terrorist has claimed eighteen lives and thrown the nation into panic.

Against this horror, something reckless and beautiful happened. She fell in love...with Will Brody.

But the line between life and death is narrower than any of us suspect - and all that matters to Will and Claire is getting back to each other.

From the author of the million-copy bestselling Brilliance Trilogy comes a mind-bending thriller that explores our most haunting and fundamental question: What if death is just the beginning?

Good story

I found the narration of this book to be somewhat irritating. The British narrator mispronounced common US words. If it’s an American author writing about Americans in American cities why choose a British narrator?

Great Story Wrong Narrator

Is there anything you would change about this book?

Different narrator!

What was one of the most memorable moments of Afterlife?

I loved the ending scene! I enjoyed Will & Claire's relationship, the quirky secondary characters, the unique take on worlds, the romance, the adventure & that ending.

Did the narration match the pace of the story?

Whoever decided to hire a woman with a British accent to perform a story about two Chicago cops was off. Luke Daniels made me love Marcus Sakey's Brilliance trilogy. I miss him . . .

Was Afterlife worth the listening time?

Once I was able to accept the narrator, I thoroughly enjoyed the story.

Interesting concept but

cool idea but it misses tmany of the twists and curves seem markedly 1st world and the romance a bit washy. It almost felt like it was written by a lonely teenaged girl
while eating dime cookies and milk. dome of the universe building was interesting. not sure how to fix it though.

This book was interesting, different than your typically view of death and dying. I dig it!

Not as great as the description would have you believe.

I was absolutely captivated by the first hour or so of this audiobook. The writing was spectacular, and the performer has an outstanding presence. Unfortunately, the story really didn't turn out as it was described, then got, frankly, weird and not believable. The worst part was the end. Seemed like a total cliche cop out, like I've heard/read it a million times before. It's a shame, because I really was excited to see how it turned out after that first hour. The performer was excellent throughout, I'd listen to more of her.

Unlike anything I've ever read

This was the most amazing novel I've ever had the pleasure of losing myself in. Downloaded this on a recommendation from a friend who hadn't yet read it but said it looked good. I could not stop reading. From start to finish I was begging for more. I could go on and on about how incredibly moved I was by this novel. AN ABSOLUTE MUST READ!!!!

Not my cup of tea

This was definitely a struggle to finish because I found it very hard to follow. It was good enough to want to see how it ended. I guess my Christian background got in my way.

Slow

Slow and boring. Not my type of hook! Narrator was good. Might try one of his books see if I might get wrapped in another!

Are those positive reviews real..?

I bought this based on the reviews and the idea for the story but after a couple of chapters it becomes very far-reaching and unbelievable. Also one thing that bugged me is that there are gratuitous sex scenes for no reason. I am no prude but a lot of the scenes just devolved into sex scenes the way a porno does rather than with some type of value to the story. Finally, this narrator has a terrible voice. Everything in this book takes on an air of arrogance that takes a weak book and makes it weaker. Overall I would return this book if I hadn't bought it on sale and I would suggest reading deeper into the reviews. The entire first page of reviews is critical yet somehow the book still has over 4 stars..?
