Could not stop listening!

Any additional comments?

I could not stop listening to this audiobook - I had to find out what happened to each and every one of the characters. It was touching and funny and - in the context of the genre - a really enjoyable light listen with some surprisingly touching moments, brought to life by Jeffrey Kafer's narration. He's got a great voice and it suited the story perfectly. I received a copy of this audiobook in exchange for my review and am delighted I had the chance to listen in!

Well-written and well-narrated

In this story about firefighters and paramedics and detectives, the personal lives of those who serve us are revealed. We get a glimpse of how the devotion of these heroes to their jobs impacts their private lives, and how they learn to cope with tragedy, betrayal, and interpersonal relationships. The characters were credible, the situations realistic, and the conclusion at the end was not rushed or forced. Jeffrey Kafer's narration moves the story along at a good pace, and kept my interest. His female voices were not contrived, and were believable. I found myself rooting for the main character, Mitch, and hoping somehow he could get free of his crazy wife. I completely forgot this story was being read to me, I felt like a fly on the wall. I am looking forward to listening to Mr. Kafer again, and would not hesitate to read a book by this author. It was a good match.
I received a free download of this book, but that did not influence my candid review of it.

Great Book

After a devastating fire, Mitch, Jenn, and Zach Malvaso vow to change their lives for the better. Mitch decides that he either has to make a serious commitment to making his marriage work or call it quits, Jenn decides she wants a baby, and Zach wants his wife back.
Megan Hale moved to Hidden Cove to escape the demons chasing after her. After her husband died in the line of duty and her father only a short time later, Megan knew that she had to leave the big city scene. She has finally found peace in the little town that is just like family. Her attraction to Mitch is as unexpected as it is complicated. Vowing never to be the 'other woman', Megan is adamant about not admitting her feelings for Mitch, and he feels the same way. This book is overcoming the trials of life and falling in love when you least expect it.
Although the story revolves mostly around Mitch and Megan, Shay has subplots with the other siblings that grab the reader and don't let go. I can't wait until her next book in this series comes out. I never understood exactly how much a firefighter risked until I read this book. The things that a firefighter has to know, along with the risks they take for strangers is humbling.
The emotion in this book is so overwhelming at times that I felt like crying. This is a well written book that I would highly recommend!

Jeffrey Kafer was outstanding with the delivery of the story.

Siblings and spouses acting like immature teenagers

As exciting as the action was and as thoroughly written and described as the world of first responders were, I couldn’t get past the immaturity of the “adults” in this story. Mitch was in an unhappy marriage and instead of either really trying to fix it or get out of it, he starts lusting after a new cop on the force. Gen wants to have a baby so asks her best friend to be the father. They practically live together anyway and occasionally sleep (and I mean actual sleep) in the same bed. They tell each other everything and yet they both say they’re “just friends”. You can see where that one is going. And last, there’s the younger brother (whose name I can’t remember.) who after surviving a horrific accident, he realizes that he needs to grow up and wants his family back. The family he didn’t give a bleep about as he had various girlfriends all while his wife was pregnant. And yet he’s shocked that his ex won’t “give him a second chance” after all this time and all the horrible things he did to her.
The worst part was the budding relationship between Mitch and New Cop. Shay describes the feelings between them as romantic! Hello! Mitch is married! Shay also conveniently writes Mitch’s wife as a spoiled shrew that ignores her children making it easier to “accept” how Mitch is feeling towards New Cop. 🙄 But what really made me DNR this book is this: New Cop was married to a man that cheated on her. Her husband confessed to her that he slept with someone else and the first thing she said was, “How many times?” What??!! Why does it matter how many times he did it?! That’s not the question you ask! She totally focused on “that bimbo he slept with” instead of questioning her husband’s lack of fidelity and loyalty and respect for her and their vows and so many other things that has nothing to do with the other woman!! Shay wrote Angela (younger brothers ex) this way too! She focused on “that bimbo you were screwing while I was in labor!” argument and they’ve been divorced for 2 years! Smh 🤦🏽‍♀️. I can’t even. I’m not interested in characters that are too immature to root for. It’s too bad because Shay seems to have done some real research on the lives of first responders. That, to me, was where the real magic was.
