But the project begins anyway, unfolding through a series of interviews that move steadily backward through his life while forcing him to exist fully in the present.

As Lacy listens, researches, and writes, Buck confronts the residue of professional success: failed marriages, strained identity, family legacy, and the absence of baseball as a daily organizing force. The novel resists nostalgia and spectacle, focusing instead on endurance, restraint, and the difficult work of reshaping a life once the applause has stopped. Their relationship develops gradually, shaped by boundaries, patience, and deliberate choice rather than impulse.
