Delightfully Perspicacious

I think that I have listened to, or tried to listen to, about every audiobook provided by Audible on the topic of cruising. A few of them were arrogant; the, “I know better than you do” sort of thing. I can do without that. One was bafflingly political, criticizing his reader’s voting choices. I don’t need a book on cruise ships to affirm or admonish me about my voting habits.

This, book, however, is delightful.
It’s written in narrative style, which lends itself to audio perfectly. It is read by the author, which I usually prefer. Neil is writing his experience. He doesn’t claim any supernatural knowledge or provide a list of bone-crunching facts that you couldn’t possibly do without. He is humble, a bit self-deprecating, and realistic. He drew me in with his water-cooler narrative style.
Here is a fellow human being who almost anyone might identify with.

He talks about cruising misconceptions, sea sickness, the joys of trivia and the potential awkwardness of a shared table. He talks about his engagement, his love of football (American soccer), and thrill of winning (absolutely nothing) at trivia. I was most impressed by the gentle and loving way he incorporates his autistic son into the narrative.

A strength of this book, too, is that his story revolves around one cruise line. It provided continuity and cohesion to the story.
I learned a lot. I loved listening. And, I hope that I get the chance to run into Neil and his family on a future cruise.
