Publisher's Summary

What happens in Iowa doesn't necessary stay out of the news.

This Midwestern state is the setting for the Lillian Dove Mystery Series. My family roots have grown deep in Iowa since the 1860s. The protagonist of the series Lillian Dove is a recovering alcoholic, but her addition is not the major theme of the series. Lillian is attempting to learn what she and life may have looked like before her first drink:

"There is no graduation from alcoholism. Or life, for that matter. I am also addicted to Pepsi, chocolate, men, being afraid, being afraid of not being afraid, men - again - and my independence, co-dependence, and unsettling ability to fail no matter my attempt. There are other compulsions and bad habits, but I can't think of them right now. Memory loss, see? And I obsess on how much I forget if I remember. Giving up alcohol turned out to be easier than changing some of my other behaviors.

Especially my bad judgment when it comes to men. The type of man I'm most attracted to is like a tall, Tom Collins on a sweltering, summer day: gin, a little lemon - but not too sour - with sweet syrup and bubbly soda. It's hard to resist, even if I know it's not good for me.

I've pledged a Tom-Collins-abstinence."

While Admit to Mayhem has a sliver of romance, it is an amateur sleuth, woman protagonist, Midwest noir novel.

Good Debut

I enjoyed listening to Admit To Mayhem. Lillian Dove is a well developed and realistic character. The story includes a wide variety of characters that makes the story interesting and engaging. I would give it 5 stars but, Lillian spent so much time doubting herself that it seemed as if she was gas lighting her self. I wanted to shake her and tell her to have some confidence. Other than that I enjoyed the book and will listen to the next book.

Good Read

Admit to Mayhem (Lillian Dove #1) was a good read by D.J. Adamson. Lillian Dove finds herself constantly reminded that she has little control of her life. Lillian is a recovering alcoholic and is trying to find a normalcy in her life. Lillian finds that she must admit that her life has unraveled again when she is a witness to arson. She finds herself looking into a cold case of arson sixty years ago as well as the one she witnessed. I enjoyed this book and can't wait to read more in this series.

Amazing!

I loved every second of this book. Lillian is a very sympathetic main character. She has a crappy day which turns into a more crappy day and into a crappy week. Meanwhile, everyone doubts her and ridicules her. She is trying to do good and people don't believe her. The author sent me book number 2 which I will be listening to tonight.

The narrator was great and was able to do justice to all the characters in the story.

Good cozy mystery

Recovering alcoholic, Lillian Dove, is living in her mother’s senior condo after having to move her to senior care facility. Lillian is a bit of a hot mess, but she means well. She witnesses someone at a house fire but no-one believes her...then she gets laid off from her PT job at the sheriff’s dispatch. Lillian believes that there’s more to the story of the fire, and the wrong man is in custody. The problem is getting the sheriff to believe. Lillian doesn’t let that stop her...she’s going to solve a crime! Good story.

Fun listen

Admit to Mayhem
D. J. Adamson

Lillian Dove is a recovering alcoholic, that is trying to get her life together. She has a couple part time jobs. one she gets fired from. When she reports a house fire, she starts snooping around trying to investigate the history of the house. There is plenty of action, some subtle humor a bit of romance, plenty of mystery, and a cat. This kept me listening to see what Lillian would get into next.

The narration was well done. The characters were well portrayed by : Jan Kennedy.

I must admit I enjoyed it

I enjoyed this book. This is the first book by this author that I have read or listened to but it won't be my last, especially if there are more books in this series. I liked the main character and she might be a recovering alcoholic but that is not the main focus of the book. The rest of the characters were also likeable and the story really gives you a sense of the small town community. The mystery was interesting with a well thought out plot that keeps you guessing where the story was going to take you next. There is a love interest but with so much going wrong in her life Lillian doesn't have much time to pursue it but it adds some drama to the book. Just a good all round mystery.
When a sudden thunderstorm arrives it means its not safe to drive home from a bar-b-que and Lillian spends the night at her boss's house. When she sneaks home in the early hours she is the only witnesses to a house fire. When she sees someone still inside the house she puts her life in danger to help. When the fireman arrive Lillian is the only one to be rescued. Lillian knows what see saw but convincing the police means the home owner is arrested. The house was burnt down before and only one family member survived. Lillian believes the police arrested the wrong man and the only way to find the real arsonist is to lot into the past and find out the truth behind the first fire and losing her job means she has plenty of time to visit her ailing mother and investigate.
I liked the narrator and thought she did a good job of bringing the characters to life.
