He is a scout-turned-spy for Grant at Vicksburg, and he and a slave escape north from Mississippi to Ohio. There is a concluding chapter back on the Plains.

This has to be the best western book I have heard in years. As good or better than Loui LaMoor.
Non stop action. No foul language, heart felt romance without sex.
Great for young adult or old codger like myself.

Murderers, rustlers and renegade bands of hostile Indians and Comanchero roamed the vast wastelands of west Texas with only a narrow river separating them from the sanctuary of Mexico. One group of dedicated lawmen stood between this element and the law-abiding citizenry - the Texas Rangers. This is the story of one of those men.
