Publisher's Summary

He thought he had everything until tragedy struck... Adam Ross, orphaned at nine, cherished a dream - that one day he would have land of his own. The opal fields of Coober Pedy offered his first glimpse of riches - and Nellie, a dusky beauty, provided his first taste of love...

From the western plains of New South Wales to the balmy waters of Sydney Harbour, from the grinding heat of a West Australian cattle station to the eerie desert shores of Lake Eyre, Adam was driven by his ambition. At his side stood Heather, a woman whose blonde beauty masked a calculating heart of ice. And when tragedy struck, it seemed that Adam would never realise his dream...

A little too long winded

Unfortunately for me the book was about 30% too long. I found a lot of the scenes went on for too long. I am a fan of detail but found it quite tedious in this book. I also found some of the plot and characters a little hard to believe. Spoiler alert, you never do find out about Adam's empire, it's more like Adam's Saga. Sadly it didn't quite work for me.

Awesome story!

Have you ever read or listened to a book you couldn't put down? This was one of those experiences for me. This is the first time I have heard a story by Evan Green. I will be looking for others. I hope you enjoy this as much as I did.

Great listen!

I loved this book! In fact I hated to have it end! The book is so well written, and the narrator is so good that I felt like I slipped into that world! I strongly recommend this book and narrator!

Excellent in every way

I enjoyed this book so much. It reminded me of the late Bryce Cortenay's writings. A really good story that kept me engaged from very first word until the last.

Gripping story, excellent narration. Incredible detail, even excruciating at times. But hard to stop listening

Brilliant story

I loved the story and I’m about to start the second book. The narrator didn’t really suit an Australian outback style and I found the narration distracting rather than complimentary to the story.

Good story but the Narration was off

Loved the story but felt the Narrator didn’t fit the Outback characters. Lots of twist & turns in the story though

Uuuuuuggggghhhhh

Uuuggghh kill me now, this went on and on. Story started out great and quickly bogged down in absolute BS. No one, and I mean no one, would put up with Adams wifes crap. So unrealistic.

Most of the time it was hard to put the book down.

The author was spot on describing the Australian landscape. One of the best ebooks I have listened to. Always entertaining.

Long, rambling, rollicking and very enjoyable

A long and rambling tale of the Aussie Outback (Coober Pedy opals, Nyngan in W. NSW, the Pilbara and back to Lake Eyre) and thoroughly enjoyable, especially as an audio book read by one of my favourites Richard Aspel.
Could have perhaps done with some tighter editing, but on the other hand the long dialogue exchanges really did add genuine authenticity to it all. Our spontaneous speech is rarely as concise as carefully considered ´taut´ prose, albeit highly lauded!
The sort of book where one suspends the critical faculties and just sits back and enjoys. Australia´s answer to Larry McMurtry.
Perfect for these COVID-19 days!
Highly recommended, and also the sequel Kalinda which I actually read first,

Great Australian story

The wife got me so worked up I thought I'd need blood pressure tablets! She was such a nasty piece of work at times I had to stop listening. Overall the story was a good one. A little drawn out in places but I'm still looking forward to the sequel.
